Saturn Releases for 07/08/96 |
Decathlete from Sega
Decathlete continues a Sega blitz this summer. It started with the
release of Nights into Dreams last week which sold extremely well and was
very well reviewed by the Japanese press and our very own domestic denizens
(citizens?) of the Net. The blitz will continue with the release of VF Kids
later this month which was previewed in last months Saturn Super disc mag.
Decathlete features brilliant graphics, great gameplay and lovable
characters (well, maybe just likable) that every successful game exploits.
Decathlete can be described as an Olympics events type game but done
extremely well and with good arcade quality gameplay. Sales for this title
should be strong since the Summer Olympics in Atlanta are less than two
weeks away and that should whet people's appetites for competition style
gameplay.
Price: US$58--Sports/Competition

month. VF Kids, Bomberman, Tokimeki Memorial and Der Langrisser lead the

releases on the Sega Saturn are listed below and there is a good chance
that quite a few of them will make it onto this volume:

| NCS' availability of the items listed above should coincide with the
Japanese street date, if not earlier. Most new titles will range from
US$54 to US$58. Tokimeki Memorial Limited Edition is a special set that
is similar to the limited set on the Playstation from last year. We expect
the price for this version to be between US$100 and US$125. Please call to
reserve your copy of this title as quantities will be limited and severely
allocated. There is no re-printing of limited edition sets, thus the 'ltd'
designation. |

Playstation Releases for 07/08/96 |
Time Gal and Ninja Hayate from Taito Corporation
Time Gal and Ninja Hayate may sound familiar to those of you who once
played the Sega-CD system on the Genesis. It was just Time Gal back then
(no Ninja Hayate in the olden days) and you helped our green haired heroine
go through different situations. Road Avenger from the Sega-CD was another
game of this type, namely interactive movies which started with the famed
Dragon's Lair from Cinematronics in the early 80s. Time Gal features anime
quality art and very basic gameplay in which you push your joypad in a
direction or press a button to get out of precarious situations.
Price: US$68--Interactive Movie |
Ugetsu Kitan from Tonkinhouse
Ugetsu is a point and click adventure game ported over from Japanese PC
game software which is a common trend in our country and in Japan. This
is when a company wants to release a piece of software on a particular system
but does not want to develop something new due to the time involved but rather
re-release something old in new packaging. Ugetsu's graphics show their PC'ish origins with their digitized portraits of characters in games, the
line art and somewhat also in the rigidity of the characters as they
animate. There are many characters in this game with whom you can interact
with so this should help keep the action interesting.

Race Drivin' a Go! Go! from Atari Games/TWI
Race Drivin' is an older racing game from the arcades. It was one of the
first driving games to use polygon based cars and the whole game conveyed a
sense of surrealness because everything moved so smoothly and looked so
simple; simple in a positive sense. This game was an 'ancestor' to Virtua Racing and helped racing games to slowly evolve into what they are today.
One new thing in Race Drivin' back then was the addition of stunt tracks
where you had to leap deep chasms with your car or turn a loop-de-loop with
your vehicle. The trick in both course segments was to build enough
acceleration so that your car could handle the road. If you failed, you would
watch a replay of your vehicle clumsily trying to navigate on the road and
then fall off to the side halfway through the loop-de-loop because you either
were not fast enough or because you veered off the road. Home versions of RD
have seemingly always suffered from poor control problems but perhaps Atari
have revamped their game engine to make for a smoother, better controlling
ride. The graphics in this new Playstation version have been improved over
last year's Saturn version.

Cyber Speed from Gaga Interactive
The same game that has already been released in the USA is now unleashed
on the Japanese game playing public. Why? Maybe stores in Tokyo needed a game
to discount by 40% immediately to spur sales, maybe people needed a break from
N64 Mario, or maybe, just maybe, Cyber Speed was mistaken for another game.
Hey, you never know. Cyber Speed should sell about 2 pcs for us in the USA.
We know the numbers but we have to take everything that comes out in Japan
which is one of the travails of a wholesaler.
Price: US$58--'Racing' simulation |
