In 1997, the Sega Saturn was our bread and butter. Every
game (even the generic ones) sold very well and there
were a few that sold thousands upon thousands of units -
Vampire Saviour, D&D Collection, and basically any
fighting game from Capcom flowed. Like Deer Park Spring
Water.
For today's MOTD, we attempt to move a stack of Saturn Fan Vol.
14 which was originally released on July 25, 1997.
Adverts in the issue are typical of the Saturn climate
back then with Samurai Shodown RPG, Side Pocket 3,
Macross DYRL, and Stakes Winner showing up. The first
feature in the magazine focuses on Sakura Taisen 2
followed by a feature called "Sega Saturn Big Titles
Collection '97 Summer" where we're treated to previews
for All Japan Pro Wrestling featuring Virtua and X-Men
vs Street Fighter. There's a sizable Super Robot Wars
feature and another one for the original Grandia game
which debuted on the Saturn. Other highlights in the
issue include Last Bronx, Slayers Royale, Bulk Slash,
Desire, and Asuka 120% Burning Fest.
In the back pages of the magazine, there's an extensive guide for
Dokyusei 2 (Classmate 2, yellow label game) which spans
27 pages and a smaller one for Samurai RPG which runs
for 4 pages. Reviews in the game include an 8.0 for Last
Bronx, 5.6 for Cat the Ripper, and 7.4 for Thunderforce
V. A total of fourteen games are reviewed in the issue,
which is pretty impressive and indicative of the
Saturn's popularity back in the day.
The condition of the issues that we have remaining is very good but
we did notice a few flaws when we removed the magazines
from storage. For one, there's some marks along the left
portion of the magazine which looks like storage wear of
some sort. The pages inside are crisp and new but in the
interest of full disclosure, we'll be pointing out any
flaws that we find in the magazines that we put up in
MOTD.
Due to the large amount of issues that we have in stock and the
cover flaws, we are pricing Saturn Fan Vol. 14 at
US$5.50 which includes shipping with USPS Media Mail +
Delivery Confirmation. While we don't expect to sell out
of the magazine anytime soon, we will mark it [SOLD OUT]
once the last issue shuffles off to its new home. Saturn
Fan Vol. 14 spans 220 pages. |
