In true kitschy style, PS2 Ultraman contains cinemas reminiscent of old Godzilla movies which feature space faring travelers who visit earth in rounded spaceships and puny humans who attempt to stop rampaging monsters by themselves. Humans won't do and monsters have to be countered by something more substantial. Only Ultraman fits the bill.
Once the meat of the game begins, players punch, kick and unleash lethal special attacks which are indicated by an energy meter on the lower-left portion of the screen. Six different attacks (Ultra Slash, Specium Ray, etc) are possible. In the Ultra Slash attack, Ultraman hurls two whirling buzz saws which are capable of cutting up a monster entirely...thereby ending a battle prematurely. When Ultraman beats an opponent, he leans back on his haunches, crosses his arms and appears to smile somewhat smugly into the camera. Yes...he's gone Hollywood. |

A total of 17 monsters and characters from the Ultraman series are featured but most of them are hidden by question marks at the outset of the game. Graphically, the action shines with glossy creature graphics and sparkling backdrops to rend into wreckage. The animation quality and movement is rather superb and surprisingly smooth as Ultraman grapples and tangles with beasts. |
