King of Fighters Maximum Impact
1st Production Bonus DVD + Book

Old school: Terry Bogard

New blood: Lien Neville

PS2 King of Fighters: Maximum Impact - New import

On the 10th anniversary of the KOF series, Playmore seeks evolution by taking what was once only 2-D and fleshes it out in 3-D splendor. Animated backgrounds provide some eye candy for onlookers while fights shimmer with special lighting effects and impact sparks. Upon starting the game, options are presented as follows:

Story | Versus | Challenge | Practice | Profile | Option

In Story mode, players choose a fighter from a roster of 19 possible choices with the last spot marked by a question mark. Two players may face off in the Versus mode and sub-options include "Single Play," "Single Versus," "Team Play," and "Team Versus." The Practice mode gives beginners a chance to hone their skills while Profile may be unlocked. Many SNK favorites return including Iori Yagami, Mai Shiranui, Athena Asamiya, Terry Bogard, Kyo Kusanagi, and many more. The action plays fast with smooth control of the fighters and the ability to mete out combos in quick succession. The bounce-back effect from Toshinden 3 and Fighting Vipers is in evidence where an opponent ricochets off walls when pounded into them.

As the story goes, when the kingpin known only as Fate sanctions the assassination of a gang leader named Duke, things quickly go awry when the hit is foiled and Fate gets whacked himself. With Southtown about to explode in all-out gang warfare, two up 'n coming young turks named Alba and Soiree Meira make an attempt to mediate the peace between rival factions. They arrange a meeting with Duke, the leader of the Mephistopheles gang, that is trying to gather together all of the street gangs under one umbrella after the death of Fate. Before any sit down is possible however, Duke asks that Alba and Soiree go face to face with a barrage of fighters in order to win an audience. As if to assure that no meeting takes place, Duke himself poses the final obstacle to any pow wow. This is their story...

Nemesis Handheld

SOTW Nemesis Handheld - New, Original Stock from 1989

Fifteen years after Konami released the Nemesis LCD game in Japan, NCS uncovers some old stock from warehouse storage and marvels at the excellent condition of the factory sealed cardboard boxes and the gaming history inside. Back in the day, Nintendo ruled the LCD gaming landscape with Game and Watch handhelds but other publishers offered some competition. Konami was one such rival and they released the Nemesis handheld on December 15, 1989 at ¥2980.  That's $26.97 on this morning's spot.

Simple to play but somewhat difficult to master, players control an LCD Gradius ship which moves up and down only. A big button on the right side of the handheld shoots off a laser to destroy oncoming ships. A row of function buttons above the controls turn the unit on and off, mute sound, and a little inset button may be pushed to reset the entire game. A plastic screen protector must be removed before starting a game but it may be set aside to use as a dust cover during storage. Pricing at US$15 which includes shipping.
