   Our suppliers in Japan are...Japanese. In the decade or so that we have known them, we've gleaned that they are believers in Jinja Shinto, a religion in Japan which lists nature spirits and guardian spirits as its deities. A jolly rotund elf in a red costume does not inhabit any facet of Shintoism.
   How then, to explain that every trading house will be taking a vacation from December 25 to December 27? In past years, companies were resistant to the concept of holiday vacations. Dead set against them since they were Jinja Shinto. Nowadays, it's a 180° reversal. Perhaps they've mellowed in their old age and have been assuaged by the spirit of the brisk holiday shopping season associated with the big old elf. One of our suppliers has also adopted a new tradition where they enjoy a big fluffy cake topped with kiwifruit each year around this time as a symbol of the season.
