Strap on the Birkenstocks, jostle into the hemp
shorts, and wander into the wilderness in search of
bugs. As the story goes, a whole mess of insects have
escaped from a laboratory. Gone. The hapless
scientist at the lab charges the player with the task of finding the same bugs that fit
the lab's specimen needs. The setting of the game
takes place during summer vacation and the player
adopts the persona of a boy with a fascination for
insects. A rascally blue-haired girl plays the part
of a rival that is also collecting specimens for the lab and barging in on
your action.
There are over 300 insects
that may be hunted and captured in Konchu Saishuu
including the popular rhinoceros beetles,
grasshoppers, butterflies, and the otherworldly
praying mantis. Players wield a net attached to a
long stick which swishes through the air to bag all
manner of six-legged creatures. Exploratory sessions
may take place during the day or night - the time
difference changes the types
of insects that are out and foraging for food or
performing their reproductive rituals. During the
day, dragonflies and butterflies wing through the
air while evening hours are when stag beetles take
flight for their mating forays.
Once an
insect is captured, an informative color-coded data card is
created which lists the stats and dimensions of the
beastie. If the insect has a song or special sound,
an audio tidbit may also be listened to. The
scientist also holds insect
lectures where one may learn more about the
creatures that crawl, fly, scamper, and squirm
underneath our noses. A VS mode is available where
one may pit insects against each other in battling
or competitive action. For example, two rhinoceros
beetles may joust each other for a thrilling session
of Coleoptera conflict. |
