A labyrinth located beneath a stately manse in olde
London serves as the setting for Londian Gothics.
Take control of a blonde heroine named Alice who
plays the part of spelunker and monster destroyer.
At the outset, Alice wears a poofy dress that's akin
to a customized maid's outfit but she may sew new
dresses on a sewing machine which have magical abilities.
One dress - a shoulderless black number - will allow Alice to turn
small to pass through small crevices and then turn
big again once on the other side. A red dress that
Alice may sew up will allow her to teleport from
location to location which is useful when monsters
attack en masse.
When Alice roams the dungeon, the view is from an isometric
perspective where she steps on cobbled walks and on
pentagram switches. Monsters stalk Alice and the
beasts to be encountered include:
Black Widow - Big Spider with web action
Iron Maiden - Casket with bits of body parts
inside from previous victims
Ogre - Ghastly grey-colored ghoul who wields
a big sabre
Death Bag - Etched with "Product of London"
on the outside which is large enough to encapsulate
Alice and suffocate her
To combat the monsters, Alice's main attack move is a shuffle kick.
That's right, shuffle kick. While useful for
low-lying monsters, it's also remarkably effective
when she climbs on top of a dragon and kicks up such
a storm that she looks like she's dancing in rickety
fashion. To complement the kicks, special attacks
may be called upon such as lightning strikes and
musket fire.
Alice may walk in a lackadaisical manner or break out into a trot
when danger arises. When changing dresses,
she'll do a magical twirl like Wonder Woman and the
screen flashes. The next scene will show her in her
new duds, ready to rock.
There's a pulsating red-rocky globe
mounted on a pedestal in levels where Alice has to
stand in front and raise her right arm like a salute in order to
burst. Once it pops, it'll disappear in a glow of
yellow incandescence. The monsters derive their
power from the globe and destroying them will weaken
the creatures. When roaming there's a chart on
screen which measures the distance and location of
monsters on the levels.
NCS Game Notes
● There's a Dress Appreciation mode in the game
where Alice may be viewed in the various dresses
that she sews. Use the trigger buttons to rotate
Alice to view her resplendency from front and back.
● To do a soft reset of the game, press both
triggers and the START and SELECT button at the same
time.
● Dress power can be recovered by standing on magic
squares.
● When Alice is killed, she slumps over in a
gruesome animation and lies prone like a puppet. |
