ETC Central Park Saturday [Nov 12, 2005]
News is fairly slow today so we rustled up some photographs that were taken this
past Saturday at Central Park. It was unseasonably warm so there were ducks galore
at the Jacqueline Onassis reservoir and a massive number of seagulls. The ducks
should probably fly south for the winter soon. The runners who jog along the
reservoir were also out in force and trudging down the length of the entire course like
upright bulldogs. Stay out of their way lest ye be mowed down like an afterthought.
The original photos were about 3.5 megs each and we've downgraded them for
size but the quality is still fairly good.

Temperatures were balmy in the City this weekend. We took a walk to
the Park all the way from SOHO. No cabs were hailed - we just hoofed the
scenic route uptown until the Jackie Onassis reservoir came into view.

The Park is a little sanctuary within the concrete and metal confines of the City. The
buildings in the background are like prison guards and the trees are their cowed
prisoners. The big brown building on the left is the imposing warden. Or something
like that.

The colors of the leaves are changing in haphazard fashion. The hues and
saturation should all be uniform in another 2-3 weeks as temperatures drop
steadily. What are those weird little lumpy lumps on the water?

Bunches of ducks. Most of them were sleeping with their heads tucked into their back
wings. They just sort of sat there, floating without movement nor motion on the
water. It was surreal and we might have to commission an artist to paint this photo.

There were also flocks of seagulls in the center of the reservoir and they formed a
little island of white. The gulls were a livelier crowd than the sleepy ducks.

This duck was awake and paddling around. We watched it swim to some reeds near
the water's edge and gobble something. It might have been eating waterbugs or a
piece of hot dog bun... or an aspirin bottle cap. We've seen ducks eat much worse.

These two swam by a few minutes later. Someone standing next to our party of
three remarked that the duck on the left was a baby. It looked big to be a baby but
we didn't challenge him. Nod and offer an "Uh Huh" or a "Yep" and shuffle along.

Staying with the subject of birds, we caught this pigeon doing its best to impersonate
a turkey. Thanksgiving is just a couple of weeks away but the pigeon's drumsticks
may need a little more development before they're ready for the big meal.
