PS2 .hack // fragment online - offline - New Import

NCS Synopsis
©NCS: Log in to a virtual world and lead a party of three warriors who explore the land and battle enemy grunts in real time action. Players who have no intention of going online may play the game offline although the full experience of .hack // fragment is gained through the online mode which only requires a broadband connection. The year is 2017 and the MMORPG known as The World has been overrun by hackers and malcontents who roam the virtual world simply to destroy legitimate players. With the structure of The World breaking down, a hero is called upon to quell the chaos and bring about a new order.

NCS Game Notes™
* The game may be played offline or online and the selections are available once the title screen appears. There's also an option to visit the Area Server to add/edit/delete network settings and test an internet or network connection. The add/edit/delete potion of the options menu is entirely in English which should help our stateside customers get up and running quickly. Internet service provider settings are saved directly to memory card in either slot, which is selectable by the player.

* In the Offline game mode, the game starts off in a Mailer program but one may also exit to The World or view Web News. In The World, players may select a class of character from six available types and then choose the look, color, height, and width of the newly created hero. If you select the widest width, your character will look like he's carrying a turkey underneath his shirt. After allocating attribute points and naming the character, it's off to the races and the game starts.

* The World screen appears and the following options are available:

LOG IN: Enter the game world
GUILD: Visit the guild for information [Online function only]
BBS: Check the latest postings online
RANKING: Online function only
QUIT: Quit the game and return to the Mail/Web News screen.

* Log in and your character will appear in a dungeon-like chamber with a blue-colored warrior in the background and a rotating blue disc in the center of the room. A blonde girl materializes and introduces the player to the controls and functions in the game. After inviting the blue-colored warrior to join your party, the blonde girl named BT will also join your merry band. Once the trio enters the game world, they'll materialize on a green/brown field with a stone monument in front of them. A number of yellow-colored rotating disks sparkles around them. At this point, the game instructs you to rotate the camera around by using the L-analog pad and focus in on the characters by using the R-analog. You'll also have to press down on L3 in order to center the camera again. These steps must be performed or you'll just stand there since the game won't proceed otherwise.

* During the introductory sequence, the party will rush forward and encounter a blue orc. Press the O button to slash it down in real-time. More tutorials follow but endure them since you'll soon be playing the game proper.

* Once control is handed over to the player, visit each of the three yellow disks to kill the little blue orc that resides near it. Between the player and the autonomous NPC blue warrior, the orcs are killed with a few strokes. Whenever the hero runs, the other two will follow obediently and they sound like they're running upon crispy leaves. Once the three orcs are destroyed, head over to the dungeon on the right side of the screen where the red arrow is pointing and descend into a dungeon where strange blue sigils mark the walls and our heroes' footfalls now sound like the tap-tap-tapping of iambic pentameter.

* The dungeon features more yellow disks which manifest orcs and various doorways to go through. Treasure chests may be opened to reveal items and another creature that may be encountered as one ventures deeper into the dungeon is a massive moths with colorful wings. To keep track of your location, a map of the area is shown on the upper right quadrant of the screen. There's a room in the first dungeon where a huge statue of a warrior holding a sword is floating above a pit. When you open the treasure chest in front of it, it will descend downwards into the pit.

* Once the first dungeon is fully explored, exit and head to the left of the map where a blue teardrop is depicted on the map. Stand there and summon a creature that looks like a Blue Slime from the Dragon Quest games. The blue creature has full facial features however - eyebrows, eyes, a bulbous nose, and a full-lipped grin with visible teeth. We're confident that Bandai's take on Blue Slime won't win any toy plush or merchandising deals.

* Players may freely explore the surface area and they'll occasionally encounter green-humanoid plant creatures that may be collected by targeting them until a yellow cursor appears and then pressing the "O" button to "pop" them from their growing areas. You may exit out of the virtual world at any time and return to the main screen to save your progress or explore other parts of the game.

* In the town square, one may visit four merchants to stock up on potions, weapons, and other needful things. The town square is surrounded by green water and one may hear the rushing liquid as it empties somewhere close by. Assorted denizens may also be spoken to in order to obtain information. Buildings in the town are marked with similar sigils as those seen inside the dungeon except they're painted with orange color instead of blue.

* If you leave your character be for about a minute, he will hop twice in place, perhaps in an effort to regain your attention.
