NDS Eyeshield 21: Max Devil Power - New Import

NCS Game Synopsis
«©NCS» Sena Kobayakawa is the favorite whipping boy of the Hah-Hah Brothers. Under their tyrannical bullying, Sena develops speed and dexterity by evading them on a daily basis. Why are they called the Hah-Hah brothers when they're not comedians, you ask? More appropriately, they should be called the "Hah-Hah-Hah?" brothers since that's what the three goons intonate in sequence when they're standing around and faced with adversity. Once Sena Kobayakawa gets to high school and joins the Devil Bats Football team at Deimon High School, his life changes and he becomes the mysterious football hero known as Eyeshield 21. Devil Bats teammates Yoichi Hiruma and Ryokan Kurita gave Sena a helmet outfitted with a green visor to protect his identity and present him as a sort of secret weapon...

In the NDS game, Sena Kobayakawa moves through the world by tapping the stylus on a target area and he'll shuffle on over. To make Sena dash towards a direction, double scratch two lines quickly in the direction you wish him to roll and he'll motor like a linebacker in search of redemption. When running, sparks appear at Sena's feet to show how powerful he is. Interaction screens are of the standard type where the Hah-Hah Brothers perform their bullying attacks and consequently, their unintentional comedic routine. Yoichi Hiruma is his usual boisterous self who whips out guns at inordinate moments and Kurita, the gentle giant, provides protection as well as engaging conversation.

To prepare for upcoming games, Kurita and Hiruma help Sena practice blocking, throwing, rushing, catching, and other football exercises. Tap the screen to catch footballs as they hurtle through the air and scratch the stylus left and right on the line of scrimmage to outmuscle opposing bruisers. To kick a ball and launch it towards the goal post, move the stylus from left to right quickly and it'll catapult like a missile. To dodge and rocket through the field when bruisers are on the way, tap on three possible routes and then watch the action play out on screen in animated motion.

NCS Game Notes & Spoilers
» Competing teams featured in the game are as follows:
Ohjo White Knights
Koigahama Cupid
Zokugaku Chameleons
Taiyo Sphinx
Seibu Wild Gunmans
NASA Aliens

» When the group of players assemble before each play, everyone's big but Kurita is inordinately big and looks like a bulbous balloon next to his teammates and opponents.

» The STORY MODE of the game features 8 chapters which lead players through Sena's evolution from unlikely football prospect to full fledged pigskin hero.

» Tournament mode allows for multi-player action where gamers link up and compete or trade custom-made team players.

» Eyeshield is an entertaining game that will appeal to fans of the manga/anime series. The characters provide amusing foil to the interaction gameplay and the action-based sequences break up the tedium of too much interaction. Although the football is not played or controlled directly, it is nevertheless fairly entertaining to tap, scratch, and tap some more to engage in the gridiron antics. All in all, a well designed game with enough references to the source material to engage fans of Eyeshield 21.
