Ueki
Kosuke goes to high school and lives the life of an
average teenager. Everything is the model of
normalcy until his teacher grants him the
power of speedy recycling. Ueki's new ability
changes trash to trees in the blink of an eye.
Greenpeace would love this guy. With
his new power, Ueki and his teacher Kobayashi sensei
enter the "Battle of the Supernatural Powers" and
face off against 98 opponents to win the ultimate
prize - the Talent of Blank. The winner gets to
choose whatever power he/she desires, like a super
hero tabula rasa. With such a valuable power at
stake, fighters will do whatever it takes to win...
In the PS2 game, Ueki battles assorted goons and competitors in 2D
scrolling action with pseudo 3D features. For
example, every stage has 4 planes on which Ueki may
move to avoid foes or close in on an intended
target. Ueki's powers are instantaneous in that
trees pop out from his hands like second nature. A
standard tree attack spurts out a little tree but
hold the tree attack button longer and a larger tree
eventually juts out and rams into anyone unfortunate
enough to stand in its way. In addition to tree
power, Ueki may also throw out punches to perform
jumping attacks to shuffle up his attack repertoire.
NCS Game Notes & Spoilers
»
The intro features a
wide-eyed Ueki and the cam shifts to a view of him
running and attacking as he transforms garbage into
trees that pop out followed by the rest of the cast
who also exhibit their unique powers.
» Upon starting a normal game, players may select
only Ueki.
The action starts along a highway near a town where
three toughs assault Ueki. The hoodlums consist of a
buster with a hair braids and
inordinately round eyes, a maniacal
clown-like bopper who wears an "I LOVE Hip HOP" jacket and green
pants. His jacket is the hoodie type with blue
stripes on tan background. The third trooper in this menacing
trio is a triangle-eyed guy with a moppet mushroom
haircut who wears a blue vest over a white shirt.
His pants are striped auburn brown and white. Since
they're rarin' for a fight, that's what they'll get.
» As the level starts, Ueki is viewed from an
isometric perspective from the side and the game
appears to be 3D but it's really a 2D side scrolling platformer.
Ueki punches and performs special attacks where amazing
powers will soon be put into play. The first
opponent met on the street is the I LOVE HIP HOP guy
who dances in place and throws out tornadoes which
blow Ueki off his feet. To convert garbage to greenery, hit the
TRIANGLE button to change it into a tree trunk
complete with leafy branches and thrusting power
which will send the hip hopper flying. Conventional
attacks such as punches are thrown by hitting the O button
while jumping is performed by hitting X.
» There are
four planes of activity - foreground to background
which may be reached by tapping the R1 and R2
triggers. A guard move may be raised by pressing the L1
or L2 triggers. After knocking the hip hopper a
couple of times with punches, he'll jump to the
background and the braid-wearing gangsta comes in
for his turn. His power is throwing spear-like
projectile but they may be interrupted if you reach
him quick enough to punch him back. Note that
garbage is not necessary for Ueki to manifest his
power. Trees may be
formed from nowhere as long as your "power meter"
has a well of reserve left. Trees are basically
powerful punches which knock foes back. For a
lengthier far-reaching tree attack, hold the
TRIANGLE button until the tree whips out
automatically at full extension. Two cars in this
level and a couple of waste baskets may be totaled.
The third attacker with the mushroom cut walks
around with both hands in his pants pockets and
head butts in quick succession. Given the chance,
he'll head butt multiple times while shuffling down
the sidewalk.
» The hip-hopper continually says, "Yo, check it out
cha'll" even as his butt is whupped. The powers
of the enemies don't discriminate. If a hoodlum is
caught up in a tornado attack, he'll get whipped up
like Ueki does and sustain damage. Punching enemies
against each other will also cause them to lose
vitality.
» After defeating the trio, Ueki exults in the
middle of the street, pumping his right fist into
the air. If you press no buttons, the camera will
continue to circle around him as he stands there in
goofy repose.
» In the next scene, a fire breathing opponent meets Ueki in the basketball
court and a duel starts. His power is a fire breath
which is helped by a bottle of liquor that he
carries. Similar to the first level, there are four
planes of activity to rush along on and objects may
be broken to release power-ups and health boosters.
The fire starter will gargle the bottle of liquid audibly before
firing off fireballs which streak across the screen.
» To perform an aerial tree attack, jump up and then
hit the TRIANGLE button. A big old tree will arc
diagonally downwards on an opponent.
