PS2 Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand - New Import
NCS Game Synopsis
«©NCSX» The desert city of Kefin was lost centuries ago but magic kept it in an ephemeral stasis. As the world continued onwards, new cities sprung up where Kefin once stood. However, the magic that is keeping Kefin in shadowy existence has begun to waver and its reappearance threatens calamity to cities that now stand in its stead...

Adol Christian and Dogi resume their partnership in an action-adventure where Adol jumps and slashes in 3D isometric environments. With news of Kefin reaching his ears, Adol sets off to search for the city and solve the conundrum of its return.

Ys fans who have played the Super Famicom versions of Ys 5 and Ys 5 Expert may rejoice in the isometric game world that replaces the 2D environs of the original game. Adol moves around in 3D towns and dungeons while hacking away at enemies and using elemental magic to turn away attackers. Special features in the PS2 game include a Gallery Mode which is unlocked after finishing the game and the ability to use save-data from Ys III and Ys IV to transfer items and weapons.

If Adol performs well and fulfills targeted objectives, a PS2 version of Ys V Expert is unlocked for enjoyment. Ys V Expert is a more difficult version of the game that was originally released on the Super Famicom in a separate cartridge. NCS recalls selling both SFC games in the US$100 range...

NCS Game Notes
* In the intro to the game, clouds appear followed by introductions to main characters Adol and Dogi. The supporting cast soon follows: Niena, Massea, Terra, Alga, Stein, Rizze, and Effey.

* A young girl named Niena (blonde pink armlets) is found by a bearded guy known as Stein on a beach. He lifts her up and brings her to town.

* Press Start and the following selections appear: NEW GAME / LOAD / OPTION / GALLERY / LINK. OPTIONs include volume levels, screen adjustment, and a 6-page tutorial on controls and playing the game. The GALLERY is locked until you complete the Ys V game.

* Start a game and waves are crashing when a voice over begins explaining the background and Kefin's part in the storyline. The camera pans across the sea port Xandria where two portly deckhands disembark from a ship and they're followed by passengers who step down the walkway from ship to port. Dogi eventually leaves the ship and walks a short distance when Adol follows behind him. Dogi leaves for town and control of Adol is granted to the gamer.

* The D-pad or the L-Analog may be used to guide Adol off the port. Pressing "X" sends him leaping upwards and a menu may be summoned by pressing "TRIANGLE." The world is viewed from an overhead isometric perspective and there is no way to rotate the camera. This was not a problem however since the town and other areas are thoughtfully designed so that nothing blocks the view of the player during exploration and interaction.

* Upon entering town, two green armored knights greet Adol but they're interrupted by Massea who greets Adol and calls them away. After the interaction, you may visit the peddler on the top of the screen who sells meat and medicine. Sadly, Adol starts with no coin at the outset of the game so you'll have to revisit her once you do. The main portion of the tank is to the NE and the inn should be visited to save your progress to memory card.
