Synopsis
«©NCSX»
When Yangus of Dragon Quest VIII fame was a young
lad, he had a steely-eyed stare (some might call it
a blank visage), orange hair, a wicked spiked helmet, and the
attitude of a thug in training. The scion of a
thief
lord, Yangus had aspirations to become an
accomplished vandal to emulate poppy.
The
PS2 game looks back at Yangus when he was 12 years
old and already a dungeon savvy explorer. Reflect back on Yangus'
youth in a 3D exploration game where he's been
gifted with a magical urn that his father brought
home one day. Yangus uses the urn during the adventure
to vacuum creatures into its cozy confines and
transform them into comrades.
Shounen Yangus also chronicles the first encounter with the
winsome Geruda where the two young
thieves forged a relationship and rivalry. The
first meeting between Yangus and the legendary
peddler known as Torneko is also shown near the
beginning of them game when the two share a prison
cell together. When roaming the world,
Yangus may have up to three animal familiars trail
him in a party. Particularly endearing is the blue slime
as it bounds along merrily when
following master...

NCS Game Notes
» Square Enix boasts over 200 monsters to encounter,
battle, and
befriend in the game including familiar faces from
the Dragon Quest games. As monsters gain in
experience alongside their leader, they'll gain new
abilities and skills to help the party during the
quest.
» The dungeons in the game are randomly generated every time Yangus
enters one and none are ever the same.
» In the intro to the game, young
Yangus carries a torch and is exploring when a green
dragon and two slimes spot him and give chase. More
monsters find him and also give chase until an
entire gang is hot on his heels. Yangus stumbles on
an urn adorned with green sigils and lifts it up to
block the monster parade. The green dragon is
summarily vacuumed into the urn and squeezes inside.
The other monsters are stunned by the turning tide
and vamoose. Later the green dragon pops out of the
urn and is friendly towards Yangus. It shows
affection by licking the young brute's helmeted
face. The intro then shows Yangus and new friend
galloping out and into a ledge where they admire a
city in the distance.
» After starting a game, a voice over
tells the tale of young Yangus and it all begins
with Yangus' father and two brigands bringing home
an urn with two handles. After planting the urn on
the table, poppy goes to sleep and the two bandits
leave. Unable to control his curiosity, Yangus pops
the lid off the urn and a bright light fills up the
room. After falling asleep and waking up on a forest
floor, the game's title screen appears and prompts
the player to create a save file.
» Yangus is shown swinging a stick as he
walks through a forest. He appears to get tired and
lies down for a little while and stares up at the
sky. He then gets up again and proceeds to leap off
a cliff an onto a town where he meets a humanoid
creature with a leaf atop its head. After this
point, control is handed over to the player.

» Yangus' first destination is the
blinking circle on the map where his new leafy
friend is waiting. As he runs, a cut scene
interjects which gives gamers the first glimpse of a
young Geruda. Follow the leaf-boy to a building and
go through the door. Downstairs, a guard is sleeping
and behind the prison bars is a familiar form - the
legendary peddler known as Torneko. Another guard
descends and surprises Yangus and leaf-boy. Yangus
makes a dash for it but is sandwiched between two
guards and eventually thrown into jail. After
struggling with the bars for a few seconds, he loses
his grip and bounces onto the bulging belly Torneko
who introduces himself.
» Although Shounen Yangus is based on
the Fushigi na Dungeon series of Chunsoft, the
company had no hand in developing or designing the
game. The developers are Armor Project, Bird Studio,
and Square Enix.
