Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
Jam with the strangest axe-handler this side of
Japan as he rages across 10 stages of musical mayhem
with tracks from the band Coil. Using nothing but a
powerful electric guitar and godlike skills, Gitaroo
Man defends the planet against alien invaders known
as the Gravillians who seek nothing less than
universal domination.
The protagonist in Gitaroo Man is U-1, a droopy drip of a bloke who
can't even stabilize himself on a stationary
skateboard. U-1 is a sniveling cur who clenches his
teeth and shakes when adversity mounts. Destined to
become a bitter hermit, the Fates intervene when the
Gitaroo enters his bleak existence. From zero to
hero in the blink of an eye, U-1 transforms into a
rampaging guitar handler as long as the almighty
Gitaroo is in hand. Confident and surly, the
teeth-gnashing Gitaroo Man tackles the invading
Gravillians with fearless aplomb.
Originally released on the PS2 in June of 2001, the PSP version of
Gitaroo Man features the same game play as the
original. New to the PSP version are wireless
multi-player options where two players may compete
against each other or cooperate against a Gravillian
boss. A new Jukebox mode allows a player to listen
to 13 songs featured in the game. The Gallery Mode
and Theater Mode from the original game are retained
for viewing character artwork and cinemas.

Game Notes
» In the intro to the game, U-1 struggles aboard
a skateboard and shuffles around like a mope. He
can't thrash on a skateboard, he has no friends, and
love is not in his immediate future. He's smitten
over a girl named Pico who has red hair and green
eyes but she doesn't return the love. Pico hangs out
with U1's rival named Kazuya. In one sequence in the
intro, Kazuya swings into view deftly handling a
skateboard and pushes U-1 back. Everything looks bad
for U-1 until his dog Puma throws an axe at him and
U-1 becomes Gitarooman, rock god who plays to
adoring crowds and bright lights. Not all is well in
the world however, a dark and cloaked being walks
into view - Zombie, leader of the Gravillians.
» Upon starting a game, Puma is noshing on a donut
and watching TV when a perturbed U-1 returns home.
He's making strange grumbling noises and apparently,
his arch enemy Kazuya has been picking on him again.
Puma tells him to jam with his animal friends which
leads to an introductory sequence which teaches a
player the mechanics and game systems of Gitaroo
Man. After the first session, a devil named Panpeus
manifests itself in U-1's home and makes a threat to
steal the Gitaroo. Puma shifts into its AC30
alter-ego and throws the Gitaroo at a meek U-1 who
instantly transforms into the confident and powerful
Gitaroo Man.

Play Mechanics
The Trace Line - a streaming filament called the
Trace Line moves from the edge of the screen towards
the center. To follow the course of the Trace Line,
move the PSP's analog nub towards the direction of
flow. For example, if the Trace Line is headed
towards the center of the screen from a westerly
direction, push the analog nub east.
Phrase Bars - Circles occasionally appear in
the Trace Line. To meet them head-on, press the
"O-button" when they enter the center reticule of
the screen and hold the "O-button" for as long as
the bars last. Phrase Bars are similar to Red Attack
Points.
» The Trace Line is colored green when you're on
track and facing it properly. The aim is to maneuver
the L-Analog so that the pointer in the reticule on
the center of the screen faces the approach patch of
the Trace Line. If you're off-course, the Trace Line
changes color to light blue to notify you of your
bad coordination.
» Every song consists of three phases as follows:
1) CHARGE PHASE - Play well to increase
Gitaroo Man's energy bar which is located on the
upper-left portion of the screen.
2) BATTLE - Alternately attack a boss with
riffs (red attack points) and guard against the
level boss' counter attacks.
3) FINAL - Perform finishing moves and guard
against attacks to end the battle and proceed to the
next stage.
» The Phrase Bar portion of the game requires that
players keep their fingers tapping lightly since the
segments of the separate phrase bars will
occasionally rush in quick and in fast sequence. Tap
too long after the current phrase bar and your
finger won't rise up and break down quick enough to
sustain the next phrase bar.
» When bosses attack, volleys consist of X, O, Δ, □
which head towards the center of the screen. To
parry the blows, press the corresponding face
buttons on the PSP. If executed properly, Gitaroo
Man dodges and swerves like a champ to avoid the
attacks. If botched, Gitaroo Man takes every hit and
loses energy.
