«©NCSX» The beautiful seaside city of Minato-ku serves as the backdrop for the latest Persona adventure where players adopt the role of a transfer student who commutes daily from dormitory to school. Persona 3 introduces creatures known as Shadows which appear during the midnight hour and wreak all manner of havoc. To combat the threat, the protagonist teams up with fellow students including Yukari Takeba, Mitsuru Kirijo, and Junpei Iori who all have the power of Persona and the ability to battle the Shadows.

At the outset of the game, the player-named protagonist arrives at his dormitory and is greeted immediately by the winsome Yukari Takeba who approaches with a gun holstered to her thigh. She seems apprehensive but a redhead named Mitsuru Kirijo approaches from behind and reassures her that it's only the new transfer student. After greetings, Yukari takes the player to to his room which is at the end of the hallway on the second floor. The next morning, Yukari knocks on the door and protag's already all dressed up and ready to go. The two take a monorail over the sea to the Moonlight School where Yukari leaves him near the entrance amidst a row of lockers. After buying a drink, head off to the administrative office to register for school and eventual class...

NCS Game Notes & Spoilers
» In the intro to the game, a blue line-art stylized interpretation of the world appears followed by a yellow moon and a number of English and French text passages that pop up while characters from the game appear in short animated sequences. Some snippets of text include "Memento mori," "cogito, ergo sum," "Remember that you are mortal," "Remember you will die."
There's a countdown to zero and a sequence of a guy who blows his head off with a gun and his body disintegrates. All tastefully depicted in silhouette, of course. A girl runs up seemingly endless stairs, the camera focuses on her, and then a red eye before the title screen appears with similar mod fashion sense.

» If you leave the game alone after the opening intro plays, a blue butterfly appears followed by a demonstration of the game that's accompanied by voiceovers and music. Watch as the team blows their heads off, runs around town in-game, battles foes, boards a train, and appear in assorted animated sequences.

» Press any button on the title screen and three selections pop up:

LOAD GAME / Resume a game in progress from memory card
NEW GAME / Begin a new adventure
CONFIG / Set Dual Shock vibration, toggle voice, toggle auto skip, toggle cursor memory, etc

» After selecting NEW GAME, players may choose to play NORMAL mode or EASY mode. After confirming your choice, the game starts with a blue butterfly flapping its wings and the prologue begins. Clouds part away from a big moon which turns from white to yellow before disappearing. The camera focuses on a video screen which pans out to show students walking and the murmur of a crowd. Various street scenes are shown which are cut with scenes from inside a apartment. A girl is crying and she lifts up a gun. Scenes from below on the street continue. The girl lifts the gun to her head - the faucet is running and her hands are trembling as she is about to pull the trigger but drops the gun. Scene shift to inside a train where a sparse crowd is lounging. A student is listening to music from a little MP3 player and staring out the window. The train doors open and he exits slowly while listening to his music. The clock is about to reach 12 midnight when the street lights flicker out. Blood trickles down from a clock. He seems to be puzzled as he continues on towards his destination. The city is dead. As he walks through the streets, coffins may be seen propped up like stakes in the ground. With his steps clacking on the ground, he reaches the dormitory and opens the door. Inside, it is similarly deserted with no one to greet him. He removes his headphones and a girl with blue eyes appears to address him. She directs his attention to a contract.

» At this point, enter your name. If so desired, English letters may be used. Another cinema plays where the girl thanks you for the contract and blinks it out of thin air before disappearing. A girl with a gun named Yukari Takeba appears and says in Japanese, "Who are you!?" while reaching for her pistol. Another girl named Mitsuru Kirijo follows behind Yukari and says, "Hold it right there!" After appraising the appearance of the protagonist, Mitsuru calms the situation down by telling Yukari that it's only a transfer student. After a bit of banter, Yukari leads him up to his dorm room and he enters the room.

» In the next morning, he's greeted by a knock in the door and Yukari appears without gun holstered to her thigh. The two take the train to school and he seems to be the silent type. The train passes over the sea to an island where the Moonlight School is located. As the two walk to campus, she greets fellow students with "Ohayo" and they eventually make it inside. She stops in front of the lockers and says goodbye before he's left alone and able to explore the grounds.

» CONTROLS
L-Analog / Movement
R-Analog / Spin camera
X-Button / Center camera perspective
Triggers / L1 and L2 rotate camera counterclockwise. R1 and R2 rotate it clockwise.
O-Button / Action button used to speak to fellow students in the halls

» If you leave the main character alone, he'll bend down and seemingly stretch his legs to knock out any potential blood clots. When running, he sometimes leaves his hands in his pockets and dashes forward like Napolean Dynamite. Most times however, protagonist runs normally with arms swaying to and fro.

» The player starts the game with Y3000. There's a concession stand in the first area which sells three drinks for 100, 300, or 5000 yen. They didn't have any Pocari Sweat though.

» The first area doesn't have much to explore but speak to the three students and then head up the door to the north and run along the hallway which contains the following rooms:

1) A bathroom which is usable - if you decide to go in, the camera stays outside as the sounds of a toilet and faucet are heard from inside.

2) Administrative office - enter and be recognized and welcomed by a brown-haired teacher as a new student to the school. Soon after entering this area, the students assemble in the auditorium for an introduction. As he's seated amongst the crowd of students, a brown-haired student named Junpei pats him on the back and they have a short conversation.

» Time passes and it's "After School" when a guy with stubble on his chin and a baseball cap named Junpei Iori address the protagonist. Yukari appears and the three have a conversation. She leaves and time passes to the Night Hour. Protag is back at the dorm which is darkly lit. In addition to a bathroom located in the back wall, protag may explore the lobby where the red haired girl named Mitsuru from earlier is seated at a sofa reading a book. She has a massive red bow in front of her shirt. Yukari is also at a nearby table where she is fiddling with a cell phone. After speaking to her, mount the stairs and explore the rooms upstairs. The dorm rooms that may be entered are identical to each other with the same bed, desk, and closet. Two vending machines on each floor also dispense drinks for Y120.

» Retire to your room at the far end of the hall and a sequence will play downstairs where a blue-haired guy in a red vest named Akihito Sanada walks up to Mitsuru on the sofa and talk before he exits the building.

» A calendar appears to mark the passage of another day to April 8, 2009. While on the way to school and passing the entrance, protagonist stops and listens in on the conversation of two girls. The school bell rings and he proceeds inside. Time passes to the afternoon and the teacher is addressing students inside. Time passes again to the Night hour. Protag enters the dorm and Yukari is on the sofa speaking to a glasses-wearing guy named Juuji Ikutsuki. Juuji wears a turtle neck. Both are seated on adjacent sofas. They rise up and greet the protag as he shuffles in. The three sit down and talk.

» Time passes and protag is seen sleeping in his bed. Downstairs, Juuji from the sofa enters a room with a big computer terminal and diagnostics monitor of some sort that is manned by the two girls - Mitsuru and Yukari.

» A cut scene plays where a crowd is enjoying music outside and drinking beer. It's 11:59 as shown on some guy's cell phone. The moon turns yellow and big coffins appear out of nowhere in front of the guy. A trickling noise sounds and the guy's face begins melting - he crumbles to the ground with a scream. Back inside, Mitsuru, Yukari, and Juuji are monitoring the situation of the Shadows.

» Another cut scene short plays where an evil looking old guy named Igor with a beak of a nose is seated on a blue sofa and attended to by a girl named Elizabeth who stands to his left. She's also dressed in a blue outfit with a blue cap. He waves his hand and opens up the contract from earlier. Seated in the distance in front of him is the protagonist. Igor explains that they're in the Velvet Room which is a rift between reality and the dream world. Igor is the master of the Velvet Room and oversees all that happens there. Igor goes on to remark that only those who have signed a contract may visit the room but the protagonist has somehow been able to access the rift by his own volition.

» The calendar moves up another day to April 9, 2009 and the protag is dressed in his suit and standing in his dorm room as light filters in from outside and birds chirp. At school, Junpei recognizes him at the entrance and the two talk and walk in together. Time passes and the students are in class and listening to teacher. Time passes again all the way to late at night just before the midnight hour. Protag is sleeping but downstairs, the girls and Juuji are monitoring the situation at the terminal. They receive a communique from Akihito Sanada and there's an alert. He returns to the dorm wounded and the others greet him at the door. A loud sound from outside reverberates and the team jumps. Scene shift upstairs to protag's room where he's suddenly dressed. Yukari knocks on his door and yells, "Hotei!" She runs in and another loud boom sounds from outside. She updates protag about the situation downstairs and they both run down where a loud bang is coming from a door. They run upstairs and the ground continues to shake. Control is handed over to the player. Keep running upstairs until a cut scene plays of the two reaching the middle area between two flights of stairs before chugging up ahead. Once upstairs, they run inside an area and she locks the door behind her. Crashing sounds continue to sound throughout the building

» A cut scene plays where the yellow moon is seen overhead and hands are seen over the edge of the wall as human-like creatures brandish knives and run towards the two. Yukari pulls out her gun an is about to shoot herself in the head when one of the monsters knocks the gun from her hands. The monsters are carrying masks. Downstairs, the crew of Akihito, Mitsuru, and Juuji are watching the scene unfold upstairs on the monitor. The protag picks up the gun and lifts it up to his head, trembles, and fires away. A cut scene plays where an otherworldly mecha-like demon creature emerges from protag's old body and later another form breaks open the first manifestation body to become an avenging angel with coffins mounted on its back. The demon attacks the group of Shadows and slashes them to pieces with a massive sword. Downstairs, the crew is shocked at the new student's power. Back upstairs, the manifestation is still drifting over protagonist before disappearing. Yukari addresses protag with a little fear but disembodied Shadows which consist of blobs on the ground with heads and hands continue the attack. A battle sequence starts where protag is located on the left side of the screen and the enemies are two blobs on the north and east portions of the battlefield.

» To attack, select the battle icon (looks like a red flame with sharp edges) and then select a target. He will run towards the enemy and strike a blow followed by enemy counterattacks. He may also use magic which is triggered by selecting the icon that looks like three starbursts - his magic use is accompanied by a short cut-scene where he shoots himself in the head, his demon spirit appears, and demon wallops mass damage on the foe. After defeating the two enemies, he gains 20 EXP and levels up.

» After the battle, he collapses and Yukari and the rest of the crew arrive to help.

» Fast forward to April 17 and protag is in hospital bed while Yukari is sitting beside him. He wakes up and she apprises him of what happened. The next day, he goes to school again and Yukari sees him at the entrance and the two walk in together. The school day passes and it's night time again and he's back at the lobby of the dorm. To save your progress, walk up to the register area and press O in front of the white book. There are four save data slots - our time for the entire game up to this point was 1 hour and 11 minutes.

» All of the dialogue from the supporting characters is entirely voiced by actors. The lead character is not voiced however.
