NDS Shaberu! DS Cooking Navi - New Import
NCS Product Synopsis
«©NCSX» If Nintendo's Cooking Navi is any indication, traditional cookbooks are going the way of the dinosaur. Instead of flipping through pages of boring and static text, Cooking Navi offers an interactive experience which guides cooks through the process of preparing a tasty meal. From the ingredients list and calorie counter to step-by-step directions with pictures and a squeaky voice guiding you, any lummox can cook a dish and stomach it too.

A chef who looks like Colonel Sanders (he, of KFC mythos) sans the glasses acts as the guiding avatar for Nintendo's cooking tutorial. Check out over 200 recipes and learn how to prepare and cook a particular dish. The ingredients are listed with a check box which you tic once you confirm they're on hand. Next, the steps are presented with text, voice, and small pictures which show how to cut, mix, chop, and season assorted filets, flanks, and morsels. The chef walks the user through each step to ensure that nothing is overlooked or missed. Once one part is finished, tap on the right arrow to proceed to the next step. If you take too long on one step, the chef will utter, "Hm?" and wonder if you've fallen unconscious.

NCS Product Notes
»
In the reference portion of Cooking Navi, there's information on ingredients, cooking tools, and preparation technique. A section contains 10 videos which shows a master cook mincing onions, slicing tomatoes, and destroying garlic.

»
In addition to traditional and not-so-traditional Japanese dishes, a selection of "western" meals are also included such as linguini with marinara sauce topped with parmesan cheese. Linguini takes a whopping 33 steps to prepare with the emphasis on making a great sauce from scratch. After the steps are done, a steaming plate of linguini is shown while the chef leads the applause. We've known college students who've made a linguini dish in four steps as follows:

1) Boil packaged linguini
2) Drop tomato sauce on linguini
3) Heat some more
4) Eat

» A note-keeping utility allows cooks to record little bits of information and observations during cooking forays by entering them in kana.

» Simple techniques may be learned to core and prepare vegetables such as avocado and onions.

» Sadly, Cooking Navi is only in Japanese. As such, NCS can only recommended it for Japanese housewives, Japanese househusbands, college students, and bachelors who haven't a clue for cooking. Kana reading Westerners will also find the software useful for upping their culinary game.
