Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
As the
last surviving member of a battalion, the
protagonist of "The Fuhyou" wouldn't be faulted if
he went AWOL. As in vamoose and gangway to calmer
shores. But he's not that kind of guy. Resolute and
determined to finish the job that his battle group
set out to accomplish, he trudges on into enemy
territory like a super trooper. Think of him as a
poor man's Solid Snake... without the style nor the
substance. After completing a few missions, the
soldier reunites with his command temporarily before
venturing forth on more theaters of conflict that
take place in the jungle and within a somber east European
city. All by his lonesome as a one man army.
At the outset of the game, the protagonist has lost his entire
squad but a catastrophe like that isn't enough to
deter him. With meager rations, a knife, and a
firearm, he is charged with infiltrating enemy
encampments and killing everyone inside by sniper
fire or conventional buckshot. When moping around in
the jungle, the flora provides some measure of cover
but it's pretty much no-holds barred warfare where soldier
boy runs, guns, and lobs grenades at his adversaries
while they do their best to return fire.

Game Notes
» Tamsoft developed the game for D3.
» In the title screen, the sound of soldiers
marching may be heard while a sergeant leads a chant
and the soldiers repeat in Japanese. It's clear that
the producers got inspiration from American movies
like Full Metal Jacket. On the left side of the
title screen, a soldier points a gun at the viewer
while four soldiers appear on the right side. The
middle of the screen features a tank that appears to
be rampaging. Press START and the soldiers yell,
"Yes Sir!"
» In the OPTION menu, players may set vibration
on/off, set volume levels for BGM, SE, and VOICE,
choose a difficulty setting from EASY, NORMAL, or
HARD, and set Sniper Mode to NORMAL or REVERSE.
» While moving along in the game world, the soldier
may crouch, walk, or crawl to avoid enemy soldiers.
There's also a sidle move where he sort of shuffles
sideways like a crab along with a sideways roll to
dodge incoming gunfire. In addition to a firearm,
the soldier may also slash with a knife and lob
grenades at enemies in the distance. The concussive
blast radius of a grenade is indicated by a red
demarcation which emanates from the bomb to let
players know how far to stay away from his own
ordnance. Some enemy soldiers attack with swords and
they'll run up while brandishing a blade. Scenes
take place in the jungle, near enemy barracks, and
other areas.
» When a soldier is sighted in the distance, a red
marker appears over his head. Press the R1 trigger
to blast him away and watch as a shock of red gore
jets from his body. After being shot, the enemy
soldier lies crumpled on the ground with a blood
splotch near his head or his side. After a second or
so, the body magically disappears.
» Throwing a grenade is as simple as pressing the
SQUARE button and then holding it for distance.
Watch as it flies through the air like a sailing
frisbee with a straightforward trajectory.
» After starting a game, the year is 1941 and the
world is at war. A sequence plays where a sergeant
speaks in Japanese to an American group of soldiers
who stand at attention inside their bunk. After the
captain finishes every few sentences, the soldiers
yell out, "Sir, Yes Sir!" The captain gets in the
protagonist's face but he is unfazed and just
repeats, "Sir, Yes Sir!" After he asks for your
name, choose from a kana alphabet and input it.
After a few more seconds of formalities, players may
select a Level 1 mission from five possible choices.
These early missions are very simple and we'd
consider them training missions than anything else.
» Before a mission starts, players may equip a
knife, a gun, and some ammo before heading off to
war. Before any mission starts, a camera flies
through the terrain to show where the enemies are
and the terrain features. In the first mission of
level 1, players start the game behind a smoking
jeep that has broken down.
» CONTROLS
L-Analog / Movement
R-Analog / Camera
Triangle / Sideways roll
X-Button / Press once to crouch. Hold to send
soldier onto his stomach
O-Button / Attack
Square / Lob grenade
R2 / Sniper Mode
D-pad / Switch weapons
» To shoot at someone, press the R1 trigger when the
targeting marker appears over his head. Shoot at any
other time and you're just wasting ammo. To pick
something up like a gun or a bonus, walk over it and
press the "O" button. The first mission requires
that the soldier clear the jungle of some soldiers
and reach an encampment through a trail.
» The second mission enforces a 3 minute time limit
where a jungle area must be cleared of soldiers.
After successfully completing this mission, the
soldier is granted 5 skill points which may be
allocated towards the following attributes:
SHOOTING
COMBAT
LIFE
STRENGTH
» In the third mission, players move through an
enemy city while being shot at by sentries and
soldiers. This level offers the first chance to use
grenades to bust open two gates.
» When moving around, crouching does wonders to
reduce the hit rate of enemy bullets. Crawling
reduces the enemy hit rate by even more.
» Two gauges are located on the upper left portion
of the screen - the first is a health meter and the
bottom is an exertion meter. When you run, perform
barrel rolls, and shoot, your exhaustion causes the
meter to drop. If it gets near empty, the soldier
will start panting as his body gets tired and weary
from the warfare. It will slowly recover if the
soldier stands around or crouches to regain vitality
and vim.
» At the end of the fourth level, the player has to
make his way to a friendly jeep convoy and regroup
with friendlies.
» In the fifth level, players are regrouped with an
infantry squad who are facing enemy soldiers on the
advance. Walk out into the open and tackle the enemy
soldiers one by one or snipe them from a distance.
After finishing the five missions in Level 1, Level
2 opens up with another 5 missions to tackle.
» The first mission in level 2 is a rescue mission
where three wounded friendly soldiers are attended
to while blasting away at enemies that roam the
level.
» Levels alternate between the jungle and cities
with some variety in the layout. Jungles also have
rivers that may be waded in and crossed. Early
missions invariably take place during the daytime
but night missions are introduced in later levels.
