NDS Starfox Command - New Import, Ships Today
NCS Game Synopsis
«©NCSX» Fox McCloud, Slippy Toad, Peppy, Krystal and the rest of the star gang reunite to defend the Lylat System once again from an alien threat known as the Anglor. In the early missions, Fox and Slippy make up a crew of two but are joined by the other members of Starfox later in the game. Fox now pilots the Arwing II while Slippy jockeys around in the Bullfrog. Ship control is handled entirely through the stylus by swishing up, left, down, or right on the touch screen while the d-pad or the L-trigger fires lasers. To execute special commands, stylus scratching is required where a quick circular scribble to the left sends the Arwing II into a barrel roll...

NCS Game Notes
» The majority of the text in the game is in Japanese and all of the speech is in synthesized gibberish. In the game intro, there's a WANTED poster where the names of the villains are spelled out in English along with price per head. The gold-colored robot who accompanies Fox at the outset sports a red visor and speaks with a synthesized robotic voice that's sounds like a munchkin. The automaton gives Fox mission objectives.

» The interaction screen in the beginning is shown on the touch screen while a map of the solar system is shown on the upper screen.

» Once the game starts, a 4-part training mission begins. In the first mission, Fox has to maneuver his ship through a succession of floating rings. The stylus is used to maneuver the ship while the D-pad, the L-Trigger, or any of the face buttons may be used to fire weapons. The bottom screen keeps track of the rings and each one disappears once you've passed through one. To perform a continuous barrel roll, draw a small circle with the stylus and Arwing will start spinning. To slow the ship down, double tap on the touch screen and the ship will scale backwards a tad. To thrust forward, draw two straight lines downwards on the touch screen and a short burst of power will send the ship hurtling forwards. To lock-on to a target, hold down the d-pad and wait for the shot to charge up and release to fire upon a target.

» The stylus control uses cardinal maneuvering - i.e, move the stylus up, down, left, or right and the Arwing II will move in the same direction. We got a little hogtied in the beginning because we're used to UP going down in conventional aircraft simulators but we got the hang of it after a few minutes. To help maintain bearings, a green targeting cursor appears in front of the Arwing to give an indication of where your ship is headed.

» In the second training mission Fox has to shoot down 30 enemy ships. After a ship is destroyed, it drops a star which must be picked up by flying through it. Once all 30 enemies are destroyed and 30 stars picked up, players may select the third training mission on the menu screen.

» Third mission - Destroy five towers that shoot back. Best strategy is to slow the speed down and then blast away at the target at the top of the tower. An HP bar is shown as the tower takes damage. Two passes may be necessary to destroy each tower if your aim is a little off on the first run.

» Fourth mission - Destroy 15 enemies and pick up 15 stars within 30 seconds. Sounds difficult but there are time extenders that may be picked up during the course of the mission which extend time to about 90 seconds total. You won't need all that time however since the enemies conglomerate around your position and won't run away.

» Once the proper game starts, Starfox and robot friend are shown on a world map with three alien forces converging towards their mother ship. Meet them at the Corneria Mountains or Plains and destroy the three before they reach the ship. The game allows Fox to draw out a route of attack to protect the ship as the three squadrons approach. Fox has a 150 second time limit to destroy and pick up stars for all three squadrons. 150 seconds is more than enough time but for slowpokes, there are time extension bonuses that may be picked up after destroying enemy ships. Each enemy in this sequence has HP bars which are drained as your shots connect and they won't go down with a single hit as in the training mission.

» The game runs fast and the feeling of flight is somewhat realistic. The arcade style game play makes for quick and thrilling strafing runs and attack patterns.

» After the first mission, Fox McCloud returns to the ship where he is greeted by Slippy Toad who joins the party.

» In the next mission, Fox has to contend with a lava field that blocks his way to protecting the mother ship which is open to attack by marauding ships. Luckily, the mother ship can attack approaching enemies while Starfox makes his way to her defense. In the first round, move Fox up by drawing a line through the two closest missiles and pick them up so that the mother ship is equipped with them. In the next round, have the mother ship attack the two closest enemy squads. To attack, simply tap on the mother ship and then draw a line to the two closest squadrons. In the next round, draw a line from Fox to the two remaining missiles so that they are sent to the mother ship. In the next round, have the mother ship destroy the next two enemy squadrons with the two missiles she has received. At about this time, Slippy Toad appears in his ship and he may be sent to destroy the last remaining squadron of attackers and towers.

» In the following mission, Fox and Slippy and robot head over to an ice world called Fichina where dark clouds provide some cover for four squadrons that are on the way to attack their ship. Draw lines from Fox and Slippy to the two closest squadrons to intercept them. The third squadron is still too far away to pose a threat to the mother ship. The attack sequences are straightforward but one has to keep an eye on the timer which only allows 150 seconds to complete the entire mission. A fourth squadron of attackers approaches slowly near the lower-right corner of the screen. To reveal some of what the clouds are covering, scratch at them with the stylus and small portions will be revealed to show where the enemies are along with two +25 second time extension bonuses, a missile pack for the mother ship, and an enemy installation on the lower right corner of the screen.  A semi-tough group of enemies in this stage are the birds that carry rocks and then drop them which become green stalagmites that shoot up from the ground and block/bar Fox or Slippy's progress.
