Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
The
limited edition of GVG includes a 60-minute original drama CD,
an alternate game cover,
and a second user game manual.
The
latest Growlanser breaks from previous games in the
series and presents the world in full blown 3D
instead of the 2D representations found in every
game since the first Grownlanser. Series artist
Satoshi Urushihara reprises his role as illustrator
and provides both character portraits and animation
cinemas for the new adventure. Although the game is
played in a 3D environment, ample amounts of
Urushihara artwork are on display as the characters
interact and explore the world.
As the story opens up, three great powers are at a ceasefire but
hostilities are still simmering underneath the
surface. In addition to the potential for all-out
war to resume, creatures from the sea have been
attacking the people. To ensure that the truce is
maintained between principalities, a peacekeeping
force is established to corral any conflicts.
Protagonist Zeonsilt (aka Zeon Schildt) is a member
of the force and ventures forth to investigate the
attacks by the sea creatures as well as help to
maintain order in the world. Along the way, Zeon
teams up with new allies as well as members of the
peace keepers.

Game Notes & Spoilers
» Intro: Characters are shown in fast cut animation
sequence swith Urushihara's artwork on display -
everyone has a pointy nose and the less hairy men
are androgynous. Towards the end of the intro, a
blue fairy kisses a hero named Zeonsilt on the cheek
before fast moving clouds appear followed by the
Growlanser V Generations logo.
» On the title screen: START and LOAD. That's it.
Leave it alone and a second cinema starts with a map
of the world followed by where a girl named Fanil
speaks and appears on scren followed by Chriass who
looks like a pirate, Seldiss who's old guy in
regalia, Mervina with Valkyrie style hat with wings
and big scimitar, Eizack - brown haired guy with
bristling hair and regal costume, Sheris - a classic
Urushihara redhead with ornate costume that looks
like a peacock tail on back, Randy who appears to be
a magician complete with blue tinted glasses, top
hat and natty costume with red furry sash. The cast
of characters continue with portraits of the
following cast members: Vanette | Pernagi | Romina |
Alessa | Gyaricke | Loofass | Lockbein | Zeakvalt |
Corin | Zeonsilt (protagonist). The name of the
voice actor who intonates for each character is also
shown on the portraits as they phase into view.
» After the character study with Urushirhara artwork
in full bloom, the title screen appears again and
you are allowed to start the game.
» Start the game and the sound of waves lapping may
be heard in the background as a male voice provides
a prologue for the adventure. A map of the world
appears with three major powers outlined in green,
brown, and orange. The voice over proceeds to detail
the conflict in the world.
» The camera opens up on a field filled with dead
soldiers in red armor and others in brown and green.
Swords and broken barrels litter the screen. A
white-haired character named Zeonsilt runs into view
and gasps at the carnage wrought. His portrait
appears and overlays the battlefield while text
boxes appear below his neck. Every bit of in-game
dialogue is voiced by the actors in the game. After
surveying the battlefield some more, the gruff groan
of a soldier may be heard. Run over to the soldier
that's lying near the broken barrel near the middle
of the screen and wait until the green arrow appears
over him. Press the "O" button and Zeonsilt will
bend down and give some comfort to the soldier.
After a short exchange, the soldier joins his dead
comrades and Zeonsilt rises up, crosses his arms and
may run off of the grim area. Winds may be heard
blowing when he explores the area.
» Exit by running south and a red crab-like creature
appears on the road. Destroy it by running up and
slashing it with your word by pressing the
"O-button". After it's gone, run down further and
find a cowering traveler who is being attacked by
another red creature. After defeating the second
beast, go back to the NPC and you may purchase
something from him and save your progress to memory
card.
» Continue down the road and two warriors may be
seen in a dispute with raised voices. One warrior
strikes the other one who goes down and walks a few
steps before collapsing on the ground. The camera
pans out and reveals green blob creatures and a
number of men who are wounded and lying face down on
the ground. Zeonsilt enters and must save the
collapsed man before the creatures kill him by
slashing away at the green blobs who are attacking
the unconscious warriors. The life bar of each
warrior may be seen above their bodies.
» While Zeonsilt is performing his life saving
duties, a purple haired girl named Vanette enters
the area from the right side of the screen with her
white/blue colored beast that walks on two legs and
sort of looks like a Chocobo with a harness. She
gives a helping hand by shooting two of the blobs
and Zeonsilt only have a couple more to kill after
her help. Once all blobs have been slashed, a
Mission Clear screen appears which shows the amount
of experience earned.
» After checking on the soldiers (who disappear)
Vanette and her faithful steed join your party and
chase after Zeonsilt wherever he roams. Continue
south and the party arrives at a cliff near the
ocean where the sound of crashing waves may be heard
occasionally pierced by the shrill cry of sea birds.
Continue further down and cross the bridge to
encounter a blue animal that's easily killed and two
lizardmen who attack with tridents. They also cast
sleep spells and can temporarily send Zeonsilt into
a slumber although Vanette saves the day by
attacking with her projectiles. We noticed that
Van's beast of burden ran away at the first sign of
trouble only to return once the coast was clear.
» Continue going south and a cut scene plays where a
fortress of soldiers is in emergency mode after a
blue/red monster is attacking a soldier and sending
the peasants into a panic. Zeon's party is charged
with monster killing duties once more...
» The battle system in Growlanser V is not real
time. It is more of a turn-based active fighting
system where Zeonsilt can move and attack during his
phase but has to wait until the enemies have also
moved and attacked before control is granted to the
player again for another attack sequence.
» The in-game characters are 3D models but their
portraits continue to consist of 2D artwork that
overlays the game screen when interaction sequences
occur.
» The D-pad may be used to walk while the L-analog
automatically sends Zeonsilt into a running gallop.

From
the Publisher
Threatened by vicious waterborne creatures, the people have
been living away from water. The three big countries
of the continent were always engaged in wars to
secure their hold on this scarce and precious land.
And in the northeastern part of a forest, a big
scale battle destined to leave its mark in history
was being fought… At this time, a youth working
towards the lofty goal of a world without wars
emerge. Can he change the destiny of the continent?
Can his dream come true?
Breakthrough and evolution in systems! Big scale
real time battles made possible!
The combat style that was so strong in the
traditional style is abandoned for a more varied,
lively and exciting real time battle style, allowing
one to experience the thrills when every second
matters. And big scale battles involving up to 30
characters are now possible, sweeping away the
regrets of quiet and lethargic battle scenes of the
past.
New STB system never experienced before! Ponder
about free development system!
STB (Seamless Tactics Battle) system, meaning
that the exact terrain when adventuring is retained
when encountering enemies, no longer differentiating
between movement and combat screens making battles
strategy-based and urgent. Combining functions “use
item” and “develop character” into one, the player
can play over and over again to savour the flavour
in its fullest, and of course the different choices
made can result in varied and different characters.
Full unique charms of characters unleashed! Take
your time to enjoy!
Breaking past limitations and adopting 3D to
display the characters, the characters created by
the master, “Satoshi Urushihara”, now radiates their
unique charms in more delicate and detailed ways!
Another unique selling point of the series – “fairy
cultivation”, allows the player to dress the fairy
up as various characters like princess, maidservant
and doll to participate in the annual Miss Fairy
pageant, and also skills can be learnt or upgraded
to help the player out.
