Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
Originally released in 1990 for the original
Nintendo Entertainment System, Square revamps Final
Fantasy III with a 3D rendition. Returning to oversee the
project is Hiromichi Tanaka who contributed to the
design of the NES game along with Nobuo Uematsu who
remakes the theme song with full bodied orchestral
backup. Although the visuals are 3D, the camera is
fixed position and cannot be rotated around when
traveling. A zoom feature is available however where
players may focus in on the world if so desired and
check out the surroundings closer. As expected
with a NDS revamp, the stylus may be used for full
control in the game from walking to running to
igniting a two-handed sword
attack.

Game Notes
» In the intro to the
game, birds fly overhead against a darkening sky before the
camera changes to a view of four riders on Chocobo.
The camera pans in from overhead to a front view and
then to a side view of the mounted travelers. As they ride, an airship
rises up behind them which kicks up dust clouds and later
lofts high into the air as the riders stop and
watch. From there, quick cut images are shown such
as an adventurer reading by the camp fire, an ornery
dragon, an adventurer petting a Chocobo, wandering, sword
swinging and acts of flaming magic. The
movie is beautifully done and evocative of the best
work that Square's production studio has released in
the market. The cinema continues with more birds
which are shown flying over a cloudy expanse as the
camera slowly closes in on a heroine staring off
into the distance. A spire is shown piercing the
clouds. An airship floats along with protagonists aboard
as they sail off into the distance. A crystal that's slowly spinning appears with glistening light before
fading away. The title screen appears.
» At the start of the game, a hero named Luneth
falls into the Cave of the Altar and gets up... only
to be met by three orc-like creatures wearing armor.
They're easily defeated with a single stylus-tap
attack and each orc only scores a measly 2 damage per hit.
» Movement may be performed either through the d-pad or
by tapping the stylus on an area on the touch screen. To run in the game, hold the B button and
move the d-pad. To run by using the stylus, tap an area far
away and hero will rush towards the spot.
» Chests may be opened by walking up to them and
tapping on them or by pressing the A button.
» Battles are initially fought on a 2D map which
shows the two sides arrayed against each other. Once
an attack is selected, the camera pans around and
shows the attack from a 3D angle where the heroes
swing their swords at the air and the consequent
blow is shown striking the creature in the distance.
» After running around the initial dungeon and killing
creatures, stairs may be climbed to rise higher. In
the first level at the top of the stairs, a
tortoise-like creature known as a land turtle
attacks. Despite its powerful bulk and imposing
appearance, its attacks only knock 1-2 damage from
hero. After doing about 100 points worth of damage
to the turtle, it cracks and disappears.

» Once the turtle is defeated, Luneth climbs some more
stairs and rejoins the surface world. To the south is a city called Ur.
» It's possible to arm the hero with two swords so
that he attacks twice against each monster at every turn.
For more conventional players, one hand may hold a
sword while the other hand grabs a shield. Armor,
helmet, and gauntlets may also be purchased and
equipped.
» Players may purchase HP revivers and potions at
the INN. To go to sleep and rest, run up the stairs
on your own volition and step in front of the first
bed. Press the A button and again to rest. When
Luneth wakes up, both HP and MP will have been restored.
There's no need to pay to sleep in the Inn.
» The music in the game is of excellent quality with
subtle backgrounds that add body to the overall
piece.
» To focus in on the action, press the L trigger and
hold it to zoom in. Let go and when next pressed,
the L-trigger will zoom out. After entering or
leaving a building or structure, the camera is reset
to the default view.
» South of Ur is a town called Kazus. The
protagonist Luneta runs away after seeing a denizen of the
town, who looks like a ribbon outline of a humanoid.
To activate a sequence in Kazus where a new party
member joins, go back to Ur and explore the forest
area to the right of the town square. A short
animation will play which is your cue to head back
down to Kazus.
