Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
Practice your kanji reading and interpretation
skills by taking a series of tests which range in
difficulty level from elementary school to high
school. Based on the PS2 software of the same name,
the PSP version of Kanji Quiz includes a total of
24,000 questions and a new question review feature
which allows a test taker to check out past
performance as well as one's strengths and
weaknesses. Plow through all 24,000 questions
successfully and you're basically as proficient as a
second year high school student.
The main mode features standard format test
taking with questions that are rattled off in quick
succession. A sample question will list a sentence
that's in hiragana, kana, and kanji. Translate the
kanji portions in the sentence by selecting answers
from a few multiple choices to the left of the
sentence. Translate correctly and be rewarded with a
chime. Answer incorrectly and get razzed. When
razzed, the software stamps an "X" next to your
wrong answer and circles the correct answer so
you'll know next time.
A kanji character examination mode allows a learner to check out a
large assemblage of kanji and five mini-games break
up the routine of test taking with some fun
challenges. One of the more challenging mini-games
shows a 3D representation of a kanji
character which is viewed from the side as it rotates. By
examining the grooves, lines, and surface features
of the character, one has to figure out its identity
and select an answer from four choices. Kanji Quiz also
supports a versus mode where two players link up in
ad hoc mode and compete against each other in the
mini-games.

Game Notes & Spoilers
» Vingt et un Systems Corp. developed the game for
D3P.
» The mascots of the game are a boy in a blue cap
and a girl with orange hair. If we squinted real
hard and set aside all reasoning, we
imagine that they could pass for Shinji Hikaru and
Asuka Langley... A robot in a suit and a doleful
looking professor also appear as guides in the game.
» The presentation is simple with a green vertically
oriented chalkboard on the right side of the
screen which contains a snippet of kanji mixed with
hiragana and kana. On the left is an open book with
passages in kana that one selects to match the kanji
on the right to complete the passage. Perform well
and a sprightly chime sounds off. If you answer
improperly, a buzzer sounds. An uplifting
song plays while the kana/kanji action is being
performed. Perhaps it loops to lift the player's spirits.
» To spice up the action, a mini-game mode (second
option on the main menu) may be checked out which
features 5 different mini-games as follows:
Mini-Games
1) A mini screen shows scrambled kanji characters.
By using deductive reasoning and sleuthing skills,
figure out what the character is and select the
corresponding kana answer from 4 multiple choices
below the screen. A variant revelation method shows small portions of kanji
characters on the screen and one must figure out
what the kana equivalent is.
2) Time attack - figure out as many translations and
conversions as possible. The timer that counts down
consists of a lighted
string of colored bulbs that circle the answer box on the
bottom of the screen.
3) A 5 x 4 playfield appears which contains 20 kanji
characters. Click on matching characters to remove them from the playfield. A time
limit keeps track and counts down relentlessly.
Make 10 matches within the time limit and you're on
your way to becoming a kanji master. Sort of.
4) An incomplete kanji segment appears on the top of
the screen. On the bottom are ten characters that
may be used to complete the segment. Three attempts
are allowed per puzzle.
5) A rotating 3D model of a kanji character seen
from the side is shown moving on screen. The
camera slowly pans upwards. Try to figure out the
kanji character just by observing the shape and
strokes on the 3D model. It's difficult to discern
it in the first few seconds but as the camera pans
higher, its easier to figure out. In the last few
seconds of the timer, the camera pans directly
overhead so it's easy as pie to figure out.
»
Every mini-game may be played in single player mode
or 2-player ad hoc
mode (second option) before going into the game.
