NCS Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
Mitsuo
Aida
was a
poet and calligrapher who's works focused on
emotions, feelings, and the meaning of humanity.
In one of Aida's poems, he wrote, "Meeting
someone can change your entire life; May you have
a good meeting" which reflected on the ability
of one person to affect another person's destiny.
Mitsuo Aida's works touched millions of people in
Japan as well as others who were fortunate enough
to come in contact with his words. In 1996, the
Mitsuo Aida Museum was established in Ginza, Tokyo
but it has since moved to the Tokyo International
Forum.
Ertain's Kokoro ni Shimiru collects the poems of Mitsuo Aida and
uses them in calligraphy lessons where players
trace out words with the NDS stylus. By skillful
application of virtual ink, entire phrases are
written out and dabbed on the touch screen.

NCS Game Notes
» Somewhat
similar
to the virtual coloring book released a few months
ago, Ertain's Kokoro ni Shimuru asks NDS stylus
manipulators to transcribe a kanji character in
calligraphy script as closely as possible.
Calligraphers practice and train for years before
they're able to perfect their craft and you're given
the opportunity to hone your calligraphy on the
touch screen of the NDS. The software keeps tracks
of the "thickness" of the application of the pen and
any thinning when writing out a character will draw
demerits. The key is consistency of the stroke and
maintaining a fluid flow when writing out a
character. In addition to calligraphy, players may
also transcribe line-drawings of simple scenes
which are rendered in calligraphy strokes with
thick, thin, and broad sweeping strokes.
» When an exercise starts, the top NDS screen shows
the full text of the calligraphy that is to be recreated.
The game starts off with a cursor which
encapsulates a portion of the text that is to be transcribed first. On the touch screen, a
magnified portion of the top screen is shown with
pinkish colored outlines that are guides which you
write over. For example, each character is shown in
a outline and you can draw over it, replacing the
pinkish character outline with your black pen ink.
As each character is finished and completed, the
touch screen moves to the next character for the
writer to complete and fill out. While all this is
going on, melodic music plays to add ambience and
mood to the writing action. The reticule on the top
screen moves from the upper right then downwards and
then to the northwest and downwards until the entire
calligraphic exercise is finished.
