NCS Game Synopsis
The kingdom of Pedda (Pedan) has fallen and a band of
soldiers led by Rojer aka Roger stalk out into the
world to collect themselves and rebel. Dissimilar to the classic Seiken Densetsu
games, Heroes of Mana is a real time tactical
strategy game where players take direct control of
heroes and monster armies with the stylus. To move
Rojer on a stage, activate him and then poke on a
target area on the map. He'll walk in four cardinal
directions to reach the spot. If he bumps into an
enemy while en route, he'll attack automatically ala Warcraft and swing until the enemy is dead. Groups
of party members may be selected and marshaled all
at once by drawing a circle around the party to
activate them. Once selected, tapping on any point
of the map will get everyone moving towards the goal.

Game Notes
» The intro to the game features an animated
cinema where the heroes of the game battle
enemy soldiers, sit around a campfire, and showcase
their fighting abilities. The intro concludes with
a sequence where the hero of the game, Rojer
(Roger) wields a blazing sword which he draws
across the screen to close it out. The title
screen appears afterwards.
» The game proper starts on an airship where a gruff
guy with an eyepatch over his right eye named
Kjukca is standing on deck. In the distance, clouds may be seen above
water. The hero Rojer appears with followed by a blue-haired guy named Euriel. A green haired girl named Teckelly
appears with a smile and a blonde Valkyriesque
woman named Gelemia who caps the crew of the
airship.
» The crew is standing on deck when they notice a
squadron approaching which bombards their ship
with bombs and artillery. They head for the exits
and maneuver an escape ship towards land. They
crash and in the next scene, their ship may be
seen smoking on a green forest area and hero Rojer
assesses the damage. After this, you're prompted to
save your progress on one of three available slots.
Tap on the purple button on top to continue. Your ship is shown on a map on the touch screen
while the top screen shows a larger view of the
landmass that your ship is located.
» Proceed further and the party is shown
while the ship hovers nearby with a ladder
reaching to the ground. The ship may be tethered
only to the little gold-colored links that are
mounted on the ground.
» The color of the ground is a blue cerulean for
the leaves that dot the ground and a bland green
color for the actual ground.
» After some more dialogue, a tutorial starts up
which teaches the ways of stylus tapping and
control. To move around, tap and hold on a character
and them drag it to a target location and then lift
the stylus from the screen. Character will then
mosey on down to the tap point. While walking a
flashing arrow appears on the ground which shows the
direction of movement of the character. Another way
of moving is to simply tap a point on the map once
and the active hero will walk on over. While
walking, you can tap on another spot and the hero
will change course automatically. To rotate the map,
press with the L or R trigger to spin the map
counterclockwise or clockwise respectively.
» Soon afterwards, you'll get to build a Rabite
Hutch inside your ship and generate a Rabite which is a little
yellow galloping creature which you direct to a
lode of ore. It'll move back and forth from the
ship to the ore to bring back chunks of crystals
back to the ship. The ore is used to build other
structures which are mounted in a room inside the
ship. Travel a little further south
and you'll find an apple tree which the Rabite
will deplete of fruit. The gathered fruit is used to
generate armies and fighting units. The tutorial
continues with information on the stats system and
the HP levels
» A warrior later challenges you and a mission
starts where you have to move the hero Rojer
towards a tree located to the right of the apple
tree. Just when you're about to reach it, the
golden-haired warrior will approach and both will
stand face to face and slash at each other with
wild abandon. You'll win of course but
during the battle, you have no control over the
slashing since it's automatic. Whoever slashes
strongest win and it's a war of attrition.
» You'll be able to generate a second
creature by building another structure inside your
ship - a Mushboom which you can use to help
Rojer defeat three warriors to the rightmost
portion of the level. Collaborate with Mushboom to
defeat the first warrior that appears and then
face off against the remaining two that approach.
After that, the words "Mission Complete" scroll across the
screen and a letter grade is assigned for your
efforts. You can also check the spoils of war and
the experience gained.
» After that a little Mushboom appears from the
corner of the screen and bounds towards the heroes
followed by the other crewmembers. While standing
around, two Beast Man airships glide
downwards and the crew disembarks. Their leader
disembarks last and approaches the party - his name is Gowzer from the Beast Kingdom. While Rojer and Gowzer and speaking, the ground trembles
and an
ominous-looking airship passes overhead. After a
bit of deliberating, Gowzer tells everyone to
hurry back to their ships and lift up and away,
leaving the hero's party on the ground.
» At this point, you're prompted to save your
progress again. In the next scene, you're able to
check party stats from the menu and then move the
ship to the next battle.
» In the next stage, the team walks into a forest
and encounters 3 soldiers - one of them walks
forward and swings a sword on Rojer to initiate
the battle. From there, select the fighters to use
in the battle. Since there are three enemies, you
are allowed three party members to tap and choose
- we selected Euriel and Teckelly to join Rojer.
Attack the closest enemy with Rojer and he'll make
short work of him. Next concentrate on the forward
moving soldier with Rojer and Teckelly who attacks
on her own volition. From the rear, Euriel shoots arrows at the last soldier
who hangs back at first but then advances where
you can send Rojer to intercept and destroy him
while Euriel continues to shoot arrows. After
defeating them, the game starts another
tutorial where you draw a circle with the stylus
around your party to select them all for battle
against a single enemy soldier or monster.
» The Rabites that you generate are used for
resource gathering, whether it be ore or fruit. The
Mushbooms are infantry which may also be considered
cannon fodder to soften enemies before the main
party is sent in to wreak havoc. Upgrading the
structures inside your ship will allow you to
generate more formidable creatures as well as
lancers and archers.
» The movement routine during battle is annoying. As
mentioned earlier, units can only move in four
cardinal directions which means that they generally
ramble around and reach a desired target in
circuitous fashion. Selecting a party of three and
then tapping a location will result in three
different ways of moving from point A to point B.
