Game Synopsis

Gundam
warriors throttle onto the battlefield once again
with Striker / Wizard Packs in tow which enhance a
suit of armor such as the Mobile Suit GAT-X105
Strike with additional weaponry and other offensive
options such as increased mobility.
Gundam Seed: Rengou vs Z.A.F.T. was originally released in 2005 for
the Japanese coin-op market and a PS2
conversion followed up in November of that same
year. The PSP version of the game features new game
modes and additional mechs such as the
ZGMF-X565/Gamma Blast Impulse Gundam, MBF-02 Strike
Rouge Gundam, GAT-X131 Calamity Gundam, and many
others for a total of 50 mechs that are playable in
the Arcade Mode. As in previous Gundam games, the
action runs hot with Gundam mechs jump-jetting,
slashing, and firing ordnance in fast-paced
missions. When an enemy mech or a group of mechs
ramble up close, expert handlers will be able to
perform rapid slash clashes and run 'n gun attacks
for exciting and occasionally frustrating battles.
New to the home versions of Rengou vs Z.A.F.T. is an enhanced dash
move called a "Boost Dash" which eats up the Boost
Gauge but is extremely useful for close range
attacks and quick exits. Mechs can also jump-jet
upwards and then continue thrusting the boosters for
a short period of sustained flight. Battles take
place on the ground, in the air, and in outer space
for a variety of scenarios to tackle. The PSP
version of the game also features a multiplayer
Arcade Mode where up to four gamers may link up in
the Cooperate Lobby for cooperative play.

Game Notes
» Intro: Two Zakus are rocketing through space
and firing their lasers when they're blown back by a
Gundam which flies up. A Providence Gundam ZGMF-X13A
appears followed by a Freedom Gundam ZGMF-X10A and
the title screen appears afterwards.
» Press the START button and the following options
appear:
1) Versus Mode: Team up with an AI controlled
mech and battle a pair of opponents
2) Mission Mode: Take flight or hit the
ground in 300 missions of Gundam Seed action
3) Arcade Mode: Select a Gundam or Zaku from
50 possible choices and then a pilot from 37
available characters.
4) Cooperative Arcade Mode: Link up with 2-4
players or visit the Cooperate Lobby to look for
fellow gamers
5) Options: Set difficulty, adjust sound
volumes, button configuration, save/load data
VERSUS MODE
The default setting is 2-on-2 action where you team up with a
mech + pilot and battle against another duo of mechs
but you can also set it so that you're in a 3 vs 1
match, a 1 vs 3 battle, or a free-for-all where
every mech fights alone. When the action gets hot,
the voice of your pilot may be heard groaning,
grunting, and screaming as the battle ensues. The
control is different from the scheme found in the
Gundam Battle games - it's similar in some ways but
different. For example, in Gundam Battle, pushing
the d-pad up twice in quick succession and then
pushing the pad to the right would send a Gundam
zooming ahead and veering to the right. That doesn't
work here. Double-tap up and the mech thrusts
forward. Double-tap up and push the d-pad to the
right and the mech thrusts forward. There's no
veering here. Versus Mode battles are fast and
frenetic. A radar on the upper right corner of the
screen keeps tabs on everyone's location on the
battlefield.
MISSION MODE
Select the side of O.M.N.I. or Z.A.F.T., enter a pilot name,
and then read a prologue accompanied by female voice
as the camera pans across the expanse of space
before reaching the Earth in shadow. Before each
mission, a short description appears with mission
objectives and a map of the theater. A Mission List
screen shows 30 mission spaces but only the first
mission is playable at the outset. As each mission
is completed, new missions open up. Many more may be
played after the first batch is entirely unlocked.
You can opt to select a mech from an aerial type or
a ground type to use in each mission. If you select
an aerial-type OMNI mech, you'll fly into the
battlefield and then contend with ground-based Zakus
who appear in small groups. Shoot them with gunfire
by tapping the SQUARE button or shoot the laser by
pressing TRIANGLE. Thrust away from danger by
hitting the CROSS button. The level is surrounded by
a barrier and your jet will just bump against the
border if you reach the perimeter. After each
mission, your score is tallied and a letter grade is
assigned to your performance. The second mission
takes place in a desert mesa-area which is near an
industrial development. Upon completing the second
mission, mission 003 and 007 open up for play.
ARCADE MODE
The main game mode where players select a mech from 50
available mobile suits and engage various campaigns
which are broken up into phases. An ally joins you
in the game which is controlled by COM AI.
» The
controls are as follows:
SQUARE / Fire laser rifle or other projectile
weapon
CROSS / Jump. Press again for sustained short
burst flight
CIRCLE / Target next enemy
TRIANGLE / Melee weapon attack
L-TRIGGER / Strong Melee weapon attack
R-TRIGGER / Secondary weapon - punch attack
or side arms
» The game is well executed and the mechs run and
dash quickly from location to location. The AI of
the enemy mechs is decent and they will press the
attack when you're wounded and head in for the kill
instead of hanging back.
» Once a mech is selected, a pilot selected screen
appears with a large cast of available characters to
choose from.
» Before each mission, a short briefing describes
the objectives and lists the enemies to be
encountered.
» In the first mission, the Gundam seemingly wakes
up inside a hangar and jets into battle. Controls
are snappy with the L-Analog or D-pad moving the
mech in brisk action.
» After each mission, a Result Report ranks
performance (From A to F and S) and scores.
» Mechs featured in the game include the Providence
Gundam and Freedom Gundam seen in the intro and more
as follows:
ZGMF-1000 Zaku
ZGMF-1000/A1 Zaku (Green Armor)
ZGMF-1000/A1 Zaku (Red Armor)
