NCS Game Synopsis
«©NCS» In
a three part arc of the King of Fighters games, the
NESTS Saga chronicled the machinations of a
secretive mercenary cabal known appropriately as
NESTS. Following the events of King of Fighters '97,
Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami have gone missing after
they defeated Orochi. As KOF '99 starts, invitations
fly out to the world's greatest fighters summoning
them to a new underground battle royale. SNK
revisits the NESTS Saga by collecting all three
games on one DVD as follows:
» King of Fighters '99 Evo (Dreamcast
conversion and Neo Geo original)
» King of Fighters 2000 (Playstation 2
conversion and Neo Geo original)
» King of Fighters 2001 (Playstation 2
conversion and Neo Geo original)
KOF '99 introduced Strikers to the fighting action and KOF 2000 and
2001 built on that system where special characters
could be called into battle for a momentary burst of
muscle power. Along with the games, the PS2
compilation features a character color-edit
function, selectable BGM (normal and arrange), and a
Multi-Matching Online BB fighting mode where players
link up through the internet to bout it out.

NCS Game Notes
» Press
START on the title screen and the familiar layout of
the Neo Geo Online PS2 games appears. The three games
(KOF 99 EVO, 2000, and 2001) may be selected from
their respective icons on the top of the screen. KOF
'99 EVO is the Dreamcast edition of the game but
2000 and 2001 are the Playstation 2 conversions from
a few years ago. There's a fourth icon at the top of
the screen which allows you to play all three KOF
games in their original Neo Geo incarnations (for
the purists out there) and a fifth icon leads to the
online Multi-Matching mode.
»
On the lower part of the screen, the options are:
Save & Load, Key Setting, Graphic Setting, Sound
Setting, and Character Edit.
»
The Character Edit feature on the main menu screen
allows you to scroll through the entire character
rosters from all three KOF games and change their
color schemes. The character names are displayed in
English as well as the options for changing the
colors.
»
In the PS2 version of KOF 2000, there is a Gallery
option
which contains an Art Gallery featuring Practice
Graphics, Challenge Graphics, and Special Graphics.
The Practice Graphics consist of eight full body
team images, one featuring Iori and Kyo, the logo
image, and two full body images of Kula and Zero.
The 19 Challenge Graphics and 12 Special Graphics
are all locked.
» The second option in the KOF 2000 Gallery option is
"Puzzle" which features all of the artwork in the Art
Gallery except the images are all scrambled in 6 x 6
grids. Your challenge is to unscramble the images by rotating and shuffling
the pieces around. In the Puzzle mode, you can view thumbnails of all the images that are
locked in the normal Art Galleries. Once you "repair" an image in Puzzle
Mode, it'll be unlocked in the Art Gallery for
viewing in full size.
»
KOF 2001 includes a PUZZLE option on the main
menu which leads into an Art Gallery and Puzznic-type
game where colored blocks on the left side of the
screen are shot at a mass of blocks on the right
side of the screen. Like-colors against like-colors
clears the blocks. Your fighter is on the top
portion of the screen and an opponent is on the lower portion. As
you clear the board of blocks, you'll perform
attacks against your opponent. If all blocks are
cleared on your side, you'll do a K.O. and win the match.
The
Gallery contains 50 images that must be unlocked
before they're viewable.
»
If playing with a Dual Shock 2, either the D-pad or
L-analog may be used for control.
»
The language may be toggled from Japanese to
English, Spanish, or Portuguese in the original Neo
Geo games.
» KOF NESTS Collection has been a long time coming
and it's worth the wait. It's unclear why SNK
Playmore delayed this particular release a few times
since the PS2 games were already available on the
market. Maybe the Neo Geo emulation needed tweaking
and the DC conversion took more time than expected.
However, the final result is a worthy addition to
any SNK fan's collection.
