Game Synopsis
«©NCS»
The 20th Anniversary of Final Fantasy rolls onwards
with the remake re-release of the second game in the
fabled adventure series.
When the emperor of Palamecia summons hordes of monsters to help
him take over the world, a fledgling rebel force
rises up to meet the new threat. They're chopped
down like wheat against the thresher. Led by a
heroine named Hilda, the remaining rebels escape and
hide out in the town of Altair to regroup and plan
their next course of action. That's when four
refugees from the fallen town of Fynn cross paths
with the rebels and are sent on an adventure that
takes them throughout the Kingdom.
Played in similar fashion to the original Final Fantasy game,
players roam a world that's viewed from overhead and
battle monsters in side-viewed action
sequences. Just like the original Final Fantasy I
20th Anniversary game, Final Fantasy II may be
played entirely in English by selecting the
language at the outset of the adventure. A bestiary
is available by pressing the "SQUARE" button and an
Art Gallery is unlocked after playing the game for a
bit. To access the gallery, go to the title screen
and choose the "EXTRA" option. The visual quality of
the game is sharp and crisp with bright images
that'll please the eyes of adventure gaming fans the
world. The music is also rich and vibrant with a
resonant quality that'll stir one's soul. Or
something like that. Sound effects are of the
routine variety with jingles, chimes, and discordant
rings that indicate various actions and attacks.

NCS Game Notes
» The intro from the Playstation remake plays
upon booting the game where a city named Fynn
burns and four youths are running from the
inferno. A bell tower collapses and crumbles
downwards as the group continues running from the
destruction. The girl looks back and then armored
soldiers slowly march towards them from the
flames. One soldier swings downwards on the girl
but his blow is parried by a warrior who jumps
into the fray. In the distance, one of the youths
throws blades into the soldier's visor which
knocks him down temporarily. The view changes to a
lateral shot of the downed soldier as armored
boots continue marching onwards. The fallen
soldier gets up... Fade out.
» Press START on the title screen and "NEW GAME"
pops into view. Similar to Final Fantasy 1, the
game can be played entirely in English or in
Japanese if you prefer. If you choose to play the
game in English, the names of the characters
appear as follows:
Firion
Maria
Guy
Leon
You can choose to rename them if you wish.
» The introductory text in the game is as follows:
The emperor of Palamecia and has called forth
monsters from the underworld... and has begun his
campaign for world conquest.
A rebel army arose in the Kingdom of Fynn to
thwart the emperor's plans.
But the rebels' castle fell to an all-out assault
by the empire.
Left with little choice, the rebels withdrew to
the remote town of Altair.
Four youths from Fynn also found themselves
fleeing the imperial forces.
They had lost their parents at the hands of the
empire.
But their escape wasn't over...
» The game starts with utter defeat at the hands
of four Black Knights who decimate the party of
four with blows that impact 800+ worth of HP
damage. The party members start with HP ranges
between 20 and 40. They're eventually revived by a
party of rebels who brings them back to life.
Hilda asks about Firion, "Will he live?" to Minwu
who in turn responds, "He will. I sense a strong
life force within him."
» According to Hilda, the empire is building a
Dreadnought in Bafsk which when completed will
launch a new offensive and they cannot allow that
to happen without doing anything.
» Soon after Hilda and Minwu leave, Firion wakes
up and eventually reunites with Maria and Guy but
Leon is missing. Firion tells the others that
Leon's probably okay. The party is rejoined and
Firion goes to see Hilda and asks to join the
rebel army but Hilda refuses his request because
they know nothing of battle and their lives would
be wasted. Hilda tells them to return to their
homes but Maria explains that they are now
homeless but Hilda welcomes them to stay in their
town of Altair. The password that she gives to
them is "Wild Rose" which is also the insignia of
the Kingdom of Fynn. Hilda continues to tell them
that Leon may be held at Fynn but the city may be
too dangerous to visit now because the emperor's
beasts still roam the streets. After speaking with
Minwu, the party knows that Fynn is their
destination despite the warning given by Hilda.
Minwu also tells the party that "Those who have
fallen in battle can be revived at a sanctuary."
» The game may be saved at any time by pressing
the TRIANGLE button and selecting the save option.
A total of 20 save slots are available per memory
stick. A section for "Key Terms" also keeps track
of important information gathered throughout the
adventure.
» Only the d-pad is used for movement. The analog
nub does nada. The CIRCLE button is used to
CONFIRM selections, the TRIANGLE button brings up
the MENU, and the SQUARE button rouses the
BESTIARY which keeps track of the monsters in the
game and how many of them you've killed.
» Information culled by speaking to people in
Altair:
-- To the north lies a small village called Gatrea
-- The port of Paloom lies to the east but a canoe
is needed to cross the lake separating it from
Altair
-- Undead are weak against fire while aquatic
monsters are weak against lightning
-- Casting fire against a flame monster will heal
it - elemental alignments
-- Can damage zombies and undead with restorative
magic like Cure and garlic
-- White magic specializes in healing and support
spells
-- Black magic specializes in offensive spells
-- A character can only learn 16 spells max but
spells can be discarded
-- To run from a battle, press both L and R
triggers simultaneously
-- There's a pub on the outskirts of Fynn
» After each battle, the party pumps their arms up
and down and then runs across the screen. You can
give two weapons to Guy and he'll strike twice on
every turn.
» An airship flies overhead outdoors every once in
a while and it can be heard rustling through the
sky.
» If a character is poisoned during battle, he'll
lose HP from the effects of the poison. However,
once the battle is over, the poison is removed
from his/her system.
» In the towns of Gatrea and Altair, the Phoenix
Down potion costs 500 Gil but an Elixir costs a
whopping 50000 Gil. The Elixir fully restores HP
and MP.
» An ART GALLERY which contains 85 pieces of
character art and other drawings from is unlocked
on the title screen under the EXTRA option after
playing the game. At the outset, only four pieces
are viewable which feature portraits of the main
characters of the game.
