Game Synopsis
«©NCS»
Donkey Kong and friends strap a pair of rocket
bongos to their waists and go on races. To reach
maximum speed, the bongos must be banged by moving
the controllers up and down in steady fashion. The
motion scheme is sort of like smacking bongos and
the game would work well with the Donkey Konga
controller if one was made for the Wii. The
maneuvering in the game is also handled entirely
through the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. For example, to
sidle to the left of the race course, simply move
the Nunchuk up and down by its lonesome and Donkey
Kong will tilt leftwards to reach bananas or
navigate curves. Since the controllers are always in
motion to maintain speed, the game engine
occasionally interprets the rhythmic beat of the
controllers as a jump move which is performed by
jerking both controllers upwards momentarily.
Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race features a total of 16 courses across
seven worlds with the first race taking place in a
jungle setting that features a breathtaking
waterfall. The second stage starts off on a beach
but quickly dives into the ocean for an underwater
excursion through the glittering depths. The game is
suitable for solo players raring to race but up to
four competitors can join in the action.

Notes
»» The Wii Remote warning screen in the beginning
is pretty silly for anyone who has a smidgeon of
common sense.
»» Press A+B on the title screen and eight
selections pop into view as follows:
RACING MODE / Select a character from six
available choices at the outset and compete
against 7 challengers
VERSUS MODE / Race against three other
human players
TIME ATTACK / Race against time in three
laps of the first course
PRACTICE / Play a single level of the game
over and over again if desired to test your skills
TUTORIAL / Learn how to play the game with
8 animated demonstrations as administered by
Cranky Kong.
LOAD MII / Select a Mii to use from your
saved data or select a new Mii
RANKING / View high scores and adjust icons
for the leader board
OPTIONS / Set controller configuration and
check out the proper usage of the Nunchuk and
Wii Remote
»» In the beginning of the game, only six
characters are selectable but ten additional
characters may be unlocked by meeting certain
conditions. The playable characters are:
Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
Dixie Kong
... and three Kremlings.
»» To speed up, move both Nunchuk and Wii Remote up
and down in a rapid fashion so that Donkey Kong
bangs on his bongos while in midair. Note that
this game was originally developed for the
Gamecube but since that console has been orphaned,
Nintendo ported it over to the Wii where the
controllers work nearly as well as the Bongo
controllers.
»» To turn in either direction, pump the Nunchuk
or Wii Remote up and down respectively for left and
right. For example, to turn to the right, move
only the Wii Remote up and down in a hammer-like
fashion. Similarly, to turn left, move the Nunchuk
up and down as if you were hammering a nail into
place.
»» To make Donkey Kong jump upwards momentarily,
pop both controllers upwards with a quick jerky
motion. This particular move is useful to grab
floating bananas and to hop over obstacles on the
course.
»» To punch at barrels on the race course, press
the A button on the Wii Remote when you're within
range to blow them backwards. Wooden barrels and
white spinning barrels may be attacked and
destroyed but beware of the metal barrels that are
indestructible. Bees can also be attacked and
knocked out.
»» Once enough flame icons are accumulated by
collecting flashing banana bunches, Donkey Kong
can perform a speedy fireball dash by pulling back
on the analog stick on the nunchuk and then
releasing once he flashes red.
»» When hammering the controllers, the speaker on
the Wii Remote makes bongo banging sounds.
»» The first stage takes place in the jungle for
some routine sights but the second stage is a
breathtaking course which starts off on the beach
with the ocean to the left. Later, the racers
enter a cavern and head underwater into a scenic
reef. For a millisecond, we were looking for Nemo.
As you continue onwards, you'll eventually run
into a massive octopus who's tentacles serve as
obstacles as they poke out of holes on the sides
of some cavern walls. The racers eventually
surface against on the beach as the first lap
ends.
»» Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race is lots of fun and
the Wii's controls are used in an innovative way.
We had a blast this morning with the game and
we're thinking the USA version will sell big
numbers once it is released. There is one niggle
however that should probably be fixed by the time
the USA version ships. Since the Wii Remote and
Nunchuk have to be continually hammered up and
down in order to maintain speed, there are times
when the rhythmic motion is misinterpreted by the
game engine as a desire to jump. This breaks up
the flow of the racing action when you just want
to flow ahead and not pop up.
»» The full cast roster is as follows:

Tiny Kong
Cranky Kong (Unlock)
Wrinkly Kong (Unlock)
