NCS Game Synopsis

Back in the day, Neo Geo fans were treated to a
little diversion called
Crossed Swords. In that game, players
viewed enemies head-on and slashed out attacks with
simple button presses. Square tested this type of
entertainment in 2003 with their dedicated
Kenshin Dragon Quest TV game which used
Xavix motion-sensing technology to register the
weapon of choice - a plastic sword. To play, gamers
wielded the sword and swung at the air like their
lives depended on it to defeat Slime, Magicians,
Skeletons, and other foes intent on death and
destruction.
As we pass the midway point of 2007, Square Enix serves up the
sequel to Kenshin Dragon Quest where players
wield the Wii Remote and slice and thrust like a
nameless hero possessed. When faced with a gang of
Slime, swish the Wii Remote in a right-to-left
trajectory and watch as the onscreen monsters are
damaged. Encounter a dracky and thrust the Wii
Remote
forward repeatedly to poke it from the air. Special
attacks may also be meted out to deal extra hurtful
damage on rollicking creatures. Unlike Kenshin
Dragon Quest, the hero does not fight alone - he's
joined by comrades including a pompous prince and
his very own poppy.

NCS Game Notes
» Intro: Hero stands atop a castle while the
familiar blaring Dragon Quest music sounds off.
He's joined by the cast of the game on a porch as
birds fly overhead. The DQS logo appears soon
afterwards.
» Press A+B on the Wii Remote and the game intro
begins which sets up the background story of the
adventure. Next, festivities are afoot as colored
bits of confetti fall from the air and fireworks
burst overhead. The people are milling about and
cries of mirth may be heard in the background. In
the next scene, the camera goes indoors and an old
dude is smacking someone with his walking stick
while a muscular guy wearing a bull mask with
horns stands in the background as a sort of
officiator. The old man turns to face the hero of
the game who's standing off to the side. The bull
mask guy sounds off with "Round 2" and hero walks
forward to face the old man while revelers around
the arena cheer and clap their hands. A practice
battle begins against the old man which teaches
the rudiments of control and cursor positioning.
The moves taught are as follows:
1) Up and down motion with the Wii Remote sets
off a downwards slashing attack which bisects the
screen.
2) Left to right motion on the Wii Remote
serves up a sideways cutting action which also
bisects the screen.
3) Diagonal movement from the top corner of
screen to the opposite corner requires more of a
sweeping movement than the previous two moves but
the cut arcs across the screen to deal damage.
4) A forward thrust of the Wii Remote enacts a
slight poking action which is shown onscreen as a
forward piercing attack.
5) Pressing the B button brings up a shield
which blunts close blows as well as projectile
attacks from afar.
6) When your power-up gauge is filled, pressing
the "2" button ignites a thunder attack by
thrusting the Wii Remote upwards.
» After the tutorial, you can walk around and talk
to the characters by pressing the D-pad in the
direction you wish to move and then pressing "A"
when you're in front of each person. The B-button
can also be pressed to move forward. Along with
the old guy and the officiator in the room is Boud,
your father, and the prince Dean.
» Your father will eventually leave so follow him
up the stairs and out the door. Outside, he greets
you and walks towards the gate. It's night now and
fireworks are still blowing up. The camera
switches to a view of the beach with an
amphibious-looking creature standing on the sand
as waves lap. Fins may be seen along its back and
a spiky tail drags behind its imposing frame. The
beast screams a guttural cry and trudges slowly
into the water where it disappears beneath the
surface. Insects may be heard as the clouds above
slowly drift across the full moon.
» In the next scene, Boud is chuckling in front of
the protagonist and talking. His right hand is
made of metal and a leather sash of sorts may be
seen beneath his vest/shirt. If you walk around
the room, you can see a treasure chest which
contains 100G, two beds, a bookcase, and some bits
of wooden furniture. When you leave the house, you
can wander around the town and check out the stall
or talk to the two people who are milling about.
To visit Dean, head up the stairs behind the two
people.
» When wandering around town, a map on the upper
right corner of the screen keeps track of your
location and shows the landmarks that may be
visited with icons for house, weapons shop, etc.
» A bridge may be traversed to visit some more
shops and talk to a little kid. When you walk up
to a vendor, he'll acknowledge your presence by
looking in your direction or change the
orientation of his body.
» If you enter the Inn, there's a drunkard seated
at the table and an old man at the bar. The
bartender doesn't say much. There's a painting on
the wall opposite the bar with the words "High
Score" underneath it. Mosey up to the painting and
press "A" and you'll get to look at a map of the
Kingdom up close.
» When you walk around the speaker on the Wii
Remote
makes muffled stepping sounds. When attacking, the
speaker on the Wii Remote also makes slashing sounds.
» Your progress may be saved in the church by
speaking to the nun that's in attendance. Simply
walk up to her and acknowledge the save-game
request. You can also choose to end the game at
this point after saving your data.
» Some of the dialogue in the game is voiced by
actors but a lot of it isn't.
