Game Synopsis
«©NCS»
The Special Edition of Riviera is the USA
version of the game repackaged for the Japanese
market. Notable features in the re-release:
» Faster loading times and a quick "exit to title
screen" function
» English or Japanese voice acting to accompany
the written dialogue
» Additional chapter that was once exclusive to
the USA version
In Ragnarok, gods and demons fought and tore the world apart. In a
last ditch effort, the gods sacrificed themselves
to create the Grim Angels who put an end to the
war and locked the demons away. After the carnage,
the power of the gods remained in the holy isle of
Riviera. A thousand years pass and the memories of
the great war have faded. However, there are signs
that the demons are slowly infiltrating the world
once more.
To counter the impending threat, Grim Angels Ecthel and Ledah
venture off in an adventure to prevent the
potential destruction of Riviera, aka the Paradise
Land. The game is broken up into simple movement,
quest, and attack phases. Choose to move by
pressing the "B" button and the heroes will
automatically move as if the page were being
flipped. Arrows delineate where the heroes may
move and generally only one path is available per
screen. If a treasure chest is encountered in an
new area that the heroes have walked into, the
Quest mode can be triggered by pressing "A" which
allows one of the heroes to open up to chest and
plunder its contents.
Bonus Schwag
All orders for Riviera Special Edition will include a bonus
"Rivera Designer's Works" hardcover booklet which
chronicles the artwork from the different versions
of Riviera released between 2000 and 2006.

Game Notes
» The
game begins with a prologue of the story of
Ragnarok as imagined by the producers of the game.
The prologue text is accompanied by a woman's
voice over and static images.
» The selections on the title screen are:
Game Start / Begin a new game
Continue / Resume a game from memory stick
Game Start (Much Exp) / Locked game mode which
requires unlocking
Extra Contents / Seven sections blocked by ?????s
which must be unlocked
» Start a new game and another prologue plays
which is accompanied by the same woman's voice
over. Once the first stage comes into view, two
adventurers and their pet cat with bat wings walk
into view from the southwest. Soon afterwards, a
snarling purple wolf confronts them and the first
battle commences. Before the attack, you'll be
able to choose an item from your inventory to use
in battle. Attacks and magic blasts are shown
right on the world map where strikes and magic are
shown with spot animations. After the battle, a
bluish hooded imp which hovers above the ground
appears in front of the party and commiserates
with the party before disappearing. The next
battle pits the party against three opponents
including a mighty mite who swings a hammer to
knock hundreds of HP off both party members. After
defeating them, you'll have to retreat to the
previous location and then proceed back to the
northeast. Read through the tutorial, select Quest
and then push up on the D-pad to move northward
and leap off the side of the platform.
» The game consists of simple movement phases
followed by battle sequences.
» There's full voice acting throughout the game.
» The blonde main character Ledah automatically
regenerates 250 HP each turn. After each
successful battle, the HP of both Grim Angels are
regenerated entirely.
» An overdrive attack can potentially knock out
over 1000 HP and is accompanied by an animated
sequence.
