Synopsis
«©NCSX»
Back in
the early 80s, Nichibutsu's Crazy Climber took place
on a flat 2D surface where a scrawny guy used only
his hands to scale the height of an entire building.
The new generation Wii update of the game features a
similarly scrawny climber named Jet who scales
buildings both mundane and exotic which offer window
ledges that are conducive to upward mobility and
rapid wall ascension.
Whereas the original coin-op version of Crazy Climber used two
joysticks to manipulate the climber's hands, the Wii
game uses a less precise Nunchuk and Wii Remote control
scheme where wagging them in opposing directions is
enough to climb upwards. Joining Jet are three other
characters - a girl named Fox, an old urbane dude
who goes by Nichi, and a robot dubbed Murphy. Murphy
is the most resilient when a pot hits him from
above. He'll lose his grip but only slide down about
3 windows before grabbing onto a ledge again. As a
comparison, Jet loses about 8 windows worth of
progress when he's hit by a falling object.
The Wii update also features 3D representations of buildings and a
four-player mode allows for exciting climbing
challenges where everyone's trying to trump the
other with their scaling skills.

Game Notes
» The intro to the game shows a guy named Jet
and a girl named Fox scaling buildings with the
greatest of ease. When Fox reaches the top of her
edifice, a helicopter arrives to pick her up.
» The game logo uses a graffiti font and gaudy color
schemes.
» Four playable characters are featured in the game:
Jet, Fox, Nichi - an old dude with red sunglasses,
black baseball cap and Hawaiian shirt, and Murphy
who looks like a blue-faced robot.
» After choosing your character, you'll be able to
select the following buildings to scale:
Bricks House (40F)
Skyscraper (60F)
Iron Works (80F)
Dark Castle (100F)
Stone Labyrinth (120F)
Star Base (150F)
Infinity Dream (Infinite Floors)
» The game is played with both Wii Remote and Nunchuk
controllers. To climb, move the controllers in
opposing directions up and down to manipulate the
hands of your climber. To sidle left or right,
thrust both Wii Remote and Nunchuk to the left or
right. To jump diagonally from one window to a
higher window, press the "A" button and shake both
controllers in the direction of the window you wish
to reach. The controls are very simple and intuitive
but require a bit of practice since sideways moving
won't register if your controller thrusting includes
extraneous movements. The tutorial in the beginning
teaches the proper way to get the sideways motions
moving right. You have to swerve both controllers in
the direction you want to move without any initial
recoil motion. Just jut them left or right from
standstill and you'll be okay.
» The first level Bricks House is simple to conquer.
Windows that have a lot of junk in front of them are
impassable so you'll have to hit the other ledges.
The second level of Bricks House introduces gates in
front of windows that'll clamp down and bite
fingers, a woman who pounds the dust out of a mat,
an eagle that lays eggs, and objects that fall from
windows.
» Each level imposes a 150 second time limit.
» In the Skyscraper level, there's a big ape near
the top of the building that'll try to smash you
down and his arms can cross the entire length of the
building. In the Iron Works level, there's a metal
ape at the top that swings an I-Beam in an attempt
to dislodge your ascent. The Dark Castle building
features swinging pendulums and doors that open
without warning to release bats that'll knock you
down a few notches. Occasionally a coffin will fall
from the windows to dislodge your climber's grip.
