The
sport of dungeon
crawling is as old as the hills. Back in ancient
times, Theseus descended into the depths of King
Minos' labyrinth to slay the Minotaur. More
recently, adventurers have been able to engage in
dungeon crawling right in their living rooms.
Imagine that.
From the Abyss fits squarely into the dungeon
crawling category and features a solo hero who roams
around the world in search of an evil beast. Along
the way, treasure is collected, monsters are struck
down, and levels are attained. The control scheme
uses the D-pad for movement while the stylus may be
used to select items or navigate through the menu
shown on the touch screen. The fighting is in real
time and takes place right on the world map where
slashes may be chained together to beat back groups
of monsters.

Three save slots are available.
»
At the outset of the game, two male heroes and two
female heroines are available for the choosing.
After selecting your preferred character, you'll get
to choose one of four colors to paint the hero.
Next, a series of four questions (in Japanese) are
asked and you're to select an answer from four
possible choices. After completing the
questionnaire, you can enter the hero's name in
hiragana, katakana, or English. A short introductory
sequence plays while your character is generated and the
adventure begins.
» The game features a
unique chain combo system where attacking a monster
so that it bumps into another monster will impart
damage on both monsters. Smack a monster into even more
monsters and every beast takes a hit and so on and
so forth for interesting chain attacks. The
effect is somewhat reminiscent of pool where each
monster is like a cue ball that smacks into the
other monsters to impact damage.
