«©NCSX» The Wham-O Super Ball has been around since 1965 and we recall the olden days when kids used to throw one or more around in the schoolyard and smack the other kids in the face with them. Those types of shenanigans probably still go on today so Bandai has announced a set of Super Balls with Super Mario Galaxy figurines inside.

   Each Super Mario Galaxy Super Ball measures 45mm or 1.77" in diameter so they're roughly regulation issue size. The Super Balls that are sold in the USA are approximately 1.66" in diameter. Eight styles are on offer including one which contains a Star and another which houses a Flower from the Mario universe. «©NCSX» Our first encounter with the game "Spelunker" was on the Atari 8-bit computers from way back when. In 1985, Spelunker was ported over to the Famicom and that single moment was enough to green-light a toy figure based on the hero of the game... over two decades later.
   Japanese manufacturer Pleasant Angels has started a toy series dubbed Old Game Heroes and the debut figure is the miner/adventurer from Spelunker. The soft vinyl figure measures 16cm or 6.29" tall and is armed with a Phantom Blaster which is used to vaporize discarnates that lurk in the caverns below. Spelunker also used a bomb to blow up rocks but the figure isn't equipped with any explosives. Our nomination for the next figure in the series: Bagman. «Larger Photos»

«©NCSX» When preorders were opened up for the Star Wars Deformed figures last year, the toy industry was celebrating the 30th Anniversary of George Lucas' masterwork. One year later but still desirable, the toys are now in stock and shipping. Darth Vader is normally an imposing figure with a wide stance and swishy cape. In Tomy's Star Wars Deformed Figure set, Darth is more munchkin than menace. Yoda looks properly proportioned as does R2-D2 but the other three figures have been squashed and deformed into squat versions of themselves. From the upper left of the photo below and rotating clockwise, the figures are:

 Boba Fett - Bounty hunter extraordinaire gets a miniaturization makeover
Darth Vader - A gauntlet is raised and the lightsaber is in guard position
Storm Trooper - Obedient space soldiers always have blank expressions
C-3PO - Chatty tin-can that shines with a beautiful golden hue
R2-D2 - Droids are usually happy just to be somewhere
Yoda - Wizened Jedi master with a yen for wise sayings

    The figures measure between 5-6 cm in height and are fully painted, assembled, and ready for display. The manufacturer's specs sheet mentions that two chase figures are randomly packaged in the various factory cases of 12 toys. In case you're wondering what they are, the first chase figure is a C-3PO repaint in stark white and the second chase figure celebrates R2-Q5 in all of its black and gold trim glory.
