Chunsoft's Fushigi no Dungeon (Mystery
Dungeon) series has been around for a long
time. The basic game engine has served as the
foundation for a number of dungeon exploration games
including Sega's recent Dramatic Dungeon Sakura
Taisen.
The latest release in the canonical series of
Fushigi no Dungeon games features the familiar
dungeon spelunking formula where movement is
stutter-step and in sync with everything else in the
game world. For example, when you make a move, any
monsters in the room also make a move in time to
every step you take. Every move you make. They're
watching you. The dungeons contain 240 different
monsters including big wasps, flower-like beasties,
Pokemon look-alikes, and 30 bosses to contend against. New to
the action is a network function where players may
go online for cooperative dungeon running.

Shiren's pet ermine who accompanies him on his
adventures.

NCS Game Notes
» Shiren the Wanderer and his pet ermine "Koppa"
return for another adventure in olde Japan. At the
outset of the game, they wander into a town and
have a drink at a bar. Shiren hears a story about
a "Sleeping Princess" in Karakuri Mansion and
resolves to investigate. Afterwards, a rendered
introductory sequence plays which features the
cast of the game and Koppa. The game proper starts
in a town while lilting music plays in the
background. Shiren walks around and is shadowed by
his pet rodent. Walk to the east and he'll
eventually spot four girls who are bouncing balls
on the game in perfect sync. An old lady watches
them play a couple of feet away.
» Control is handled through the nunchuk while the
Wii Remote is used for interacting with townfolk. To
run, hold the "B" button on the Wii
Remote and move
around with the analog stick on the Nunchuk to
gallop at a fast pace.
» There is no voice acting in the game but the
dialogue is terse and not overbearing. The game
starts up fairly quickly as well so you'll be
exploring dungeons within 15 minutes of starting
the game.
» To trigger an important event that'll get you
into the dungeons quickly, run all the way to the
southeast of the island where you'll encounter a
girl and a guy. Next, head into the tavern in the
southern part of the town where an adventurer and
a group of brigands are seated. To show the thugs
that he's no one to be trifled with, the
adventurer slashes once through the air. For a few
seconds nothing happens but then the lead thug's
blue-haired ponytail drops to the floor. He then
summarily vamooses the joint followed by the other
henchmen. That leaves just Shiren and his newfound
ally in the room along with the proprietors who
are thankful that the rabble rousers have been
scared away. The warrior joins your party and
you're allowed to leave town.
» The first "dungeon" area features simple
monsters and objectives. The word dungeon is in
quotes because Shiren's exploring an outdoor area.
Simply move around and view the map overlay on the
left of center area of the screen. As Shiren
moves, his location is indicated by a flashing
marker on the map.
» Although the mechanics of the game are the same
as the other Fushigi no Dungeon games, the visuals
in the Wii sequel are sumptuous with lush green
flora and vibrant graphic sheen on everything.
Even the mist in the first area has a luminous
quality to it.
» At the outset, Shiren regains 1 HP for every 11
steps that he takes. As he levels up, he'll
recover HP at a faster pace.
» To pick up items that are strewn on the stage,
simply walk Shiren over to where the items are and
he'll automatically retrieve them.
» To view the grid that Shiren wanders upon at any
item, press the "C" button and it'll light up
beneath his feet and all around the land that he
walks upon.
» The action in Fushigi no Dungeon runs quick and
very straightforward. There's a sweet simplicity
in the dungeon crawlers which are based on
Chunsoft's original game engine that's appealing.
The basic premise requires very little from the
player - your job is to explore a dungeon, kill
everything inside, and pick up treasures. In later
stages, traps and tougher monsters are introduced
along with objectives to accomplish.
