Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
Milestone gave gamers Chaos Field,
Rajirugi (Radirgy), and Karous
in the past few years but they're back with another
vertical shooter which sports a strange name.
Illmatic Envelope originally made the rounds
in location tests at Club Sega venues last year and
was officially released this past summer in Japan as
a coin-op Naomi kit.
We're convinced that Milestone builds their
shmups with a "Shoot 'em up construction kit" which
allows them to lay out the stages, adjust the
palette, and set the bullet patterns. The
construction kit is probably open-ended so they can
add new functions by way of special "filters" or
"modules" that make their shooters less cookie
cutter and discernible from the previous one.
In
Illvelo, players shoot at enemies with standard
shots but "dolls" may also be used to attack and
protect the main ship. The wrinkle in Illvelo that
makes it unique is the warp function where over 100
hidden stages may be visited for short jaunts where
objectives are conquered and the player is rewarded.
All orders for Illvelo will include a bonus DVD that
was given away by the publisher in 1:1 ratio.

NCS Game Notes
»
Press the "+" button on the Wii Remote and the
following game modes may be selected:
Arcade Mode / Standard arcade version of
Illvelo
Easy Mode / For children
Hard Mode / For skilled players capable of
twitching like a one-credit game finisher
Special Mode / Destroy every enemy or object
that appears on the screen in order to pass each
short stage. Miss one and you fail
Config / Set difficulty, screen mode (tate or
yoko), life stock, vibration toggle, button config,
etc
» The nunchuk is used to move the ship and the Wii
Remote shoots (A button) and positions the dolls (B
button). To release a bomb, press the "X" button.
When the B button is pressed, the dolls move in
concert with the ship and may be positioned as you
see fit. When the B button is released, the dolls
will remain where you positioned them and serve as a
second "ship" which shoots independently of your
ship's shots.
» To warp into a random special stage, look for the
flashing mini screens with a finger pointing down
upon it. That'll take you to a random warp stage
where every enemy has to be destroyed to pass. Miss
one and you fail.
» Weapon systems include standard vulcan shots,
bubble shots, as well as multiple blue lasers that
shoot out and cover a wide arc of the area in front
of the ship.
» The dolls start the game in a flanking position on
the ship but they may be fired forward by pressing
the B button once.
» One of the enemies in the game looks like a
glasses-wearing salaryman with white bat wings.
» Only five continues are allowed per game.
» The stages in Illvelo are unique and make zero
sense... in the first stage, the ship flies over
what appears to be an urban cityscape with staplers
opening and closing next to buildings and pink fungi
in evidence. In the skies above, huge scissors are
snapping, mechanized ships are flitting around, and
pencils are jutting into the air from the ground.
Then there are the large Lego blocks that make up
parts of the landscape and also serve as the outer
covering of the end-level boss. You'll know the boss
is approaching by the tumbling rain of Lego blocks.
» The second stage takes place in outer space where
ice cream wedges on sticks mesh with a landscape
where milk cartons dot the city along with tipsy
water bottles. Large medicine capsules, forks,
chopsticks, and more also appear to confound
sensibilities. Hands with the index finger pointed
upwards swoop in as the first wave of enemy forces
to contend with. Later on, slow moving flies perform
a circular dance but prove to be little challenge.
The end level boss is a rotating Lazy Susan that's
surrounded by platters of food and drinks. After
destroying two of the food assortments, the chef
makes an appearance in the center of the third Lazy
Susan. The chef's face turns lobster red when it's
defeated...
» Illvelo is a visual smorgasbord of unrelated
themes and chaotic designs. The controls and
play mechanics are standard fare for a Milestone
shooter but the visuals are trippy. Players willing
to forgive the nonsensical graphical style will get
to play a fairly hectic shooter that's not bad.
