Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
Samson and Adon are Super Big Brothers who have
Hercules-ish physiques and powerful shots that spurt
out from the tops of their shiny bald heads. Their
bodies seem to glisten and ripple even when standing
still. They're
so strong and formidable that they don't need a
spaceship when flitting around in outer space. Just
a bikini brief will do, thank you very much.
NCS would describe Rei Cho Aniki as
a shooter that's brimming with male homoerotic
antics and devilish visuals that would put the blush
on anyone. Almost anyone. The muscular he-men
aren't the main characters in the game but serve
more as side arms to the main hero Idaten or the
heroine Benten. The little blue mascot seen on the
upper left corner of the game cover is named Uminin.
Upon starting a new game, players may choose either
Idaten or Benten and then choose a sidearm. Idaten
can select Adon or Samson while Benten gets to team
up with a pair of cherubs that are way past their
prime named Mika & Eru. The first stage is somewhat
reminiscent of Gradius where enemies stream in from
the right side of the screen and leave behind energy
capsules when destroyed. Larger opponents appear and
the end-level boss is a locomotive with arms and a
face that's almost like Thomas the Tank Engine
except he's surly and fires scattershot. The second
end-level boss is a lackadaisical male bather, and
the third boss is a muscle-bound pair of meatheads
who basically double-team Idaten or Benten from
both sides with waves of fast-moving buckshot.
Rei Cho Aniki was originally released on the PC-Engine Super CD-ROM2 in 1992 under
the name of Cho Aniki and the PSP remake
features updated graphics, BGM, and a new song
composed by Hayama Hiroharu.

Game Notes
» The game begins with a total of 3 life stock.
Once they're depleted and the game is over, there's
an interesting button-tapping challenge where you're
supposed to repeatedly hit the "O" button as quickly
as possible. Samson and Adon are shown on the screen
in a curious embrace (which may be viewed below...
for your viewing pleasure
displeasure) as grunting sounds emanate from the
PSP's speakers. If you tap the buttons quickly
enough, you'll get another go at the game continuing
off at the start of the level. This is especially
useful if you've reached the third stage and don't
want to play through the previous two stages again.
» The first two stages are a breeze but the third
stage which takes place underwater bumps up the
difficulty level a bit. Enemies enter the screen
from both sides which necessitates the constant
turning and shooting in two directions. Press the
"L" or "R" trigger to face left and right in order
to fire upon encroaching enemies. The sea stage also
features an enemy which shoots out a massive amount
of schooling fish.
» Whenever an enemy is destroyed, a little man is
ejected from the burning wrecking. The men may be
colored red, blue, or yellow. The only way to amass
a huge score is by collecting these little ejected
men. An easy way to collect each and every one that
appears is to stop pressing the fire button. When
Idaten or Benten stop firing, the little men are
drawn to them as if by mighty magnetic force.
» Cho Aniki games have generally sold well for the NCS
company. Even back in the days of the PC-Engine.
Never underestimate the power of the homoerotic
shooter.
