NCS Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
World War II saw its conclusion in the Spring of
1945 but as the world prepares for peace, strange
things are afoot. A renegade band of military
commanders from across the planet have joined
together to form a new regime known as CANY that
seeks global domination. With a massive arsenal of
weaponry at their disposal, CANY's plans are set in
motion and the world trembles against their
onslaught.
Normally, the nations of Earth would mobilize their military
machines and strike at a threat such as CANY with
steely eyed precision but there won't be any of
that. To answer the call of CANY, the world sends a
single plane. Just one. That's you. A one man army
capable of leveling the entire military
infrastructure of a military superpower with some
buckshot, a few bombs, and a thimble full of
bravado.
Strikers 1945 Plus was
originally released in December 1999 for the Neo Geo
MVS (blue cart) where it captivated fans of vertically scrolling
shoot 'em ups. The game was released on the USA
Playstation Network for download a little over a
week ago and a few days later, it was released for
the Japanese marketplace on a UMD. The PSP
conversion allows players to select either digital
or analog control, map the face buttons, and grants
unlimited continues. The game's difficulty level is
fairly high since the enemy shots are thick and
unforgiving. One wrong twitch and you're out. A
total of six planes may be chosen at the outset but
there's a seventh unlockable plane called the "XP-55
Ascender" which is modeled after a USAF prototype.

NCS Game Notes
» To
unlock the XP-55 Ascender, move the cursor over the
spinning question mark in the jetfighter selection
section and perform the following D-pad tugs: Down,
Up, Down, Up, Down, Down, Down, Down, Up. Once the
Ascender is unlocked, it won't appear alongside the
other planes. It only appears in the randomizer and
it'll be up to you and Lady Luck to select it as
your ship.
» The XP-55 Ascender is as fast as the Flying
Pancake but we prefer the Lightning which is the
first ship in the selection screen. Lightning isn't
as fast as the Ascender or Pancake but it's fast
enough and Lightning's firepower is immense. The
guided missile sidearms are another benefit to using
the Lightning. When things get cozy onscreen with
pink bullets, enemy jets, and blue cannon fire, the
missiles find their way to targets on the other side
of the screen when your ship's mobility is hampered
by buckshot.
» End-level bosses can be defeated without firing a
single shot. No typo. You can bob and weave through
the boss sequences and avoid their shots without
shooting at all and they'll eventually
self-destruct. Remember, Strikers 1945 was
originally designed for the arcade coin-op arena and
Psikyo didn't want any shmup wiz-kids bobbing and
weaving all day with bosses on a single quarter.
» The game may be played with the PSP D-Pad or the
analog nub. We're voting in favor of the analog nub
as the preferred control mechanism since the PSP's
rift-pad is too uncomfortable to use on a shooter
that requires continual twitching and minute
maneuvers. The control input is toggled in the
OPTION menu.
