Game Synopsis
«©NCSX»
Whenever a new Macross game is announced, there's
generally a good amount of fanfare since the brand
is well known and beloved by international fan base.
The buzz has been building in Japan over the past
couple of weeks and Bandai's latest Macross game is
another 3D mission-based shooting game. Players take
control of a Valkyrie which can transform into three
forms - battroid, jet fighter, and robot.
The Macross franchises featured in Macross Ace
Frontier are as follows:
» SDF Macross
» Macross Plus
» Macross 7
»
Macross Zero
» Macross Frontier
Over 40 Valkyries may be piloted in the game
including the YF-19, VF-1S Strike Valkyrie, VF-19,
YF-21, and the VF-1J. The Valkyries may be upgraded
and customized during the course of the missions.
Roughly 30 characters from the Macross universe also
appear for dramatic foil. To enhance the atmosphere
of the game world, Bandai also throws in speech
snippets and a number of classic songs from the
various Macross series.
In addition to Single Play, up to four gamers may
link up wirelessly in the Network Mode for a
cooperative game where four Valkyries tackle mission
objectives or battle each other for primacy.

Game Notes
» In developing Macross Ace Frontier, Bandai
used the game engine from the PSP Gundam
Battle titles and adapted it for the Macross
universe. As such, we're in love with the game.
Ace Frontier features four primary
Macross chapters which are broken up into missions.
Before each stage, a short primer introduces mission
objectives and sets up the parameters.
» The game controls are as follows:
D-pad - Movement
Analog - Change from battroid to robot to jetfighter
Cross - Gain altitude / Afterburners
Circle - Launch missiles
Triangle - Punch (close-range attack)
Square - Fire primary weapon
R-Trigger - Target enemy
Pushing the d-pad twice in quick succession will make the Valkyrie
perform a dash move or if you're in jetfighter mode,
a barrel roll.
» When a group of enemies are in the distance, you
can target them in your sights and then launch a
barrage of missiles. The projectiles will stream
towards them with obligatory vapor trails and
explode upon impact. The sequence of events is
surprisingly gratifying.
» If a Valkyrie has 26 missiles in its arsenal, you
can press and hold the "Circle" button to launch all
of them in one fell swoop. A target is usually
obliterated a few seconds later.
» As mentioned earlier, the game is based on the PSP
Gundam Battle engine and the controls are somewhat
similar. Note however that the analog nub is only
used for toggling the Valkyrie between its three
different configurations. Some missions start off
with the Valkyrie in jetfighter mode but we
generally found that the battroid was nearly perfect
for most missions including the ones that take place
within cities filled with buildings that are
thisclose together. Since the game is built on the
versatile Gundam engine, skilled players can
maneuver, shoot, dash, and mix up attacks with nary
a hiccup from the software. As such, the action runs
fast and fluid without frustrating bottlenecks.
» The Gallery section features the following bonus
contents for fans to explore and pore through. Most
selections are locked at the outset however:

REPLAY - Watch movies of you playing the game
CHARACTER - Check out profiles for 35 characters
MECHANIC - Weapon data and images
