Hudson Soft introduces a new line in horror
CALLING brings new heights to the horror genre, with
a breath-taking control system that immerses the
player into its nightmare scenario. The player
begins the game trapped in a strange room, with the
Wii Remote doubling as the on-screen protagonist’s
mobile phone. Using a torch to scour the dimly-lit
area, players will also receive mysterious calls to
their handset, which are answered by raising the Wii
Remote to their ear. From this simple basis, CALLING
then ramps up the fear, as a ghostly voice speaks
directly to the user…
The story revolved around the urban legend of the ‘Page of Black’
website. Rumour has it that anyone accessing the
site will die from a coma brought on by an unknown
cause. The site is a simple black page with a
numeric counter in the centre, but is linked to a
low-key chat room. Not everyone can enter the chat
room, but on doing so, the player’s psyche starts to
receive calls from ‘Abyss’,. They then enter a state
of limbo in a place known as ‘Border’ which is
seemingly located between life and death.
There are several areas in the ‘Border’, and they are inhabited by
Spirits which start contacting its various feelings
via the user’s mobile phone. Occasionally, these
spirits will also attack the player. As such, while
avoiding their attacks, the user must attempt to
solve the mysteries of ‘Border’ and has to seek an
escape route.
CALLING is a horror title like no other. The fear generated by the
received phone calls and the eerie location serve to
create a tense, nightmarish situation. A clever mix
of exploration and puzzle-solving is called into
play, while the claustrophobic locations hide
secrets and danger within their many shadows. From
the moment the first, crackling call is received,
CALLING will scare the player and make them wary of
picking up the phone…
The Black Page
Rumor has it that you will die if you visit the Black Page Website
and see “something” in the site. Anyone can visit
the site, but only a few can actually see things
within the site. The site is literary all in black
and just shows a counter. Some say the site is a
hoax, a prank, or a marketing ploy. A few people say
the site is a bridge to something sinister and the
counter indicates the number of people who have died
after seeing the site.
Main Characters
Those who see something in the Black Page begin to stray somewhere
between life and death. There are multiple
characters who are present throughout the game. The
Calling revolves around these characters
and their fight for survival.
In-Between Space
The spirits of the dead go to the space-between-space where the
Calling revolves around. This place is made up
by the memory of dead characters and various
locations in the space such as houses, schools and
hospitals etc. Someone or something is drawing the
living to this space for a reason that becomes
apparently horrifying once the characters discover
the truth.

Game Notes » A phone call wakes the protagonist up with its
incessant ringing. Blurry-eyed at first, the
protagonist gets up and explores the dilapidated
room that he's in. The Remote controls a red dot
which is the targeting cursor while the Nunchuk
moves the hero around. To inspect objects in the
room, walk up to them until the red dot becomes a
magnifying glass and press the "A" button. To grab
items such as your ringing mobile phone, walk up to
it until the red dot becomes a hand and press the
"A" button.
» Immediately after grabbing the cellphone, it
begins to ring. Press the "-" button to accept the
call and a weird voice mutters a bit before the line
goes dead. The voice is heard through the Remote's
built-in speaker along with the subsequent busy
signal after the line goes dead. Press the "-"
button again to shut off the busy signal.
» To swing open the door, walk up to it and wait
until the green hand icon appears. Maneuver it over
the doorknob and swing the Wiimote to simulate the
opening of a door. Some doors are locked and they'll
only rattle when you attempt to open them.
» The strange voice from the earlier phone call will
sound off during the normal course of play and haunt
you through the Remote's speaker. A spook-battle
against an old specter also happens very early in
the game where you'll have to wag the Remote left
and right and press the "A" button. It wasn't very
scary or startling to watch a feeble old-man-ghost
try to put the fright in us.
» The bathroom is filthy and flushing the toilet
will cause a realistic "toilet flushing" sound to
emanate from the speakers. A dripping sound may also
be heard in the bathroom since a plumber probably
hasn't visited in over 2 decades.
» To save your progress, go back to the bedroom and
visit the little black cat on top of the drawer
towards the corner of the room. A total of 13 save
slots are available.
» Doll heads and doll torsos may be seen inside the
storage room along with a doll wearing a kimono.
More importantly, you'll find a flashlight in the
storage room. The sliding doors at the back of the
storage room only open slightly but you can look
inside through the slightly opened crack and view a
bunch of dolls inside. If you point the flashlight
on the floor inside the back room, you'll see a
granny has collapsed. The protagonist will give out
a little gurgle of surprise when the old woman's
prone form is illuminated by the light. To add to
the drama, a box of doll heads will fall in the room
which causes the protagonist to cry out once more
like a little girl.
» Turn around to look into the storage room again
and a bunch of giggling dolls will appear behind the
slightly opened sliding doors which causes the
protagonist's heart to pound. A lot of hair also
begins to stream out of the inner storage room. To
avoid dying of a heart attack and ending the game,
turn around and exit the room. At first, the door
won't budge but you'll have to try again and a
Remote wagging icon will appear so that's your cue
to wave the Remote up and down to force the door
open.
» Return to the bedroom and the table phone will
ring. This time, it's a spooky girl's voice. Soon
afterwards, a ghost girl appears in the room and the
protagonist has his back against the wall while
ghostly hands surround him. A save prompt appear
afterwards.
» The first chapter's over and the next chapter
features a girl character who's inside a classroom
which contains chairs, a xylophone, a guitar, piano,
and a drum set (all of which can be played).
