Last Bronx hit the arcades roughly 1 year ago. After a stint in the pay-for-play arenas of Japan and the USA, Last Bronx takes its turn at home this week. Purveyors of the arcade version will notice that all of the characters have been redrawn but in a good way that sacrifices little of their detail. A comparison montage is posted below for your reference. | ![]() |

The home version of Last Bronx doesn't have the sheen and incredible detail found in the arcade original but whatever graphical detail is sacrificed, Sega makes up for it with dead-on control and exceptional gameplay. Like the engines found in Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers, there is 3-D movement of your polygon based fighter as you wheel and deal your way through all of the fighters. | ![]() |

All of the fighters wear street-garb and have a look of urban roughness about them. The characters are a passable mix of street fighters who carry weapons such as batons, swords, bo-sticks and other weaponry designed to inflict damage. The gameplay translates perfectly from the arcade version and everything runs at a clippy speed. This is the game's strongest suit. | ![]() |

Here is the comparison of the arcade and Saturn profiles of four of the characters. The Saturn's characters look a little rougher than their arcade counterparts but thats to be expected. The good thing is that most of the detail has been retained on the Saturn version. Headbands, belts, caps, etc have all made the transition to the home version with no trinkets or accessories sacrificed. Last Bronx is Sega's latest foray into new fighting games that go beyond the characters in their flagship VF. I believe that its just in case VF flags and they need another license that is deserving of sequels and propagation. The Saturn version of Last Bronx plays great and runs fast. The graphics are not as polished as the arcade original but until Sega gets their Titan board into a home console, we'll have to live with these sacrifices. Our highest recommendation. | |
