Few software titles have been as highly anticipated as Macross Digital Mission VFX. Macross, the animation series has a huge fan base thanks in part to its endearing characters. The fourth episode of the first Macross series featured Rick Hunter and Minmei trapped inside the hulk of a spaceship. Rick was the vulnerable yet potentially awesome fighter pilot while Minmei was the young student with aspirations of becoming a singer. Both would reach their goals. In that memorable episode, viewers got to know these two characters and their hopes, dreams and fears.
That fourth show was great because it focused on the human side of what would become an epic battle for the survival of the human race. Before the first Macross series ended, viewers would get to know and love Roy Fokker, Lisa Hanes, Captain Gloval of the SDF-1 and a great supporting cast of characters. Who can forget Max and Miriya? Few animation series' have succeeded in both Japan and America like Macross has and it should bring back some memorable mech fighting sequences in the air and on land.
Digital Mission features a full cast of characters that will help you throughout your battles and missions with dialogue, hints and advice. Fans of Macross should remember the crew of girls and women that helped guide and defend the SDF-1. In one of the early episodes, some of the girls used trak-balls to move little shields on the SDF-1 to protect it against incoming missles. While the girls in Digital Mission VF-X won't get that involved with the war, they do provide an integral portion of the game in the intelligence department.
Here, a girl that bears a striking similarity to Minmei takes charge in giving you the scoop on your upcoming mission. Numerous cut scenes will feature the central intelligence women in various scenarios and scenes that depict them in everyday situations to remind you that its not just war when it comes to Macross. The girls will also communicate with you when you are in the cockpit and headed for the next theatre of conflict. Mission information and other relevant details will be relayed to you in a continuous data stream when necessary.
To the far left, one of the girls strikes a contemplative pose. To the immediate left, 'Minmei' is your virtual co-pilot and keeps in touch with you via aerial com-link.
Your Veritech fighter faces off against three megalithic enemy mechs in a city. Your fighter has the ability to transfrom from a jet into a megaton robot armed with a hand cannon. The odds may seem against you but your mech has a large arsenal on hand to blow even these monster mechs away. The streaming cluster missles from the animation have been retained for some very cool effects when you let them loose. A regular vulcan cannon is your standard weapon which does moderate damage against most brands of enemy armor.
Your targetting systems are online and ready to go. Most levels will feature multiple enemy aircraft and mecha onscreen at the same time for an authentic Macross battle scenario and feel. Fans of Macross and the company that produced this game can read an interview with Ueda Hiroshi (CEO of UNiT) and the work that went into this game by clicking on www.ex.org/2.1/04-unit1.html for the scoop.
A Veritech in the midst of a transformation as it floats in the void of space. Six models of the fighter are available in the game which have differing capabilities in terms of maneuverability and top speed.
