NCS have been
fans of the Puyo Puyo series since the olden days when it was a little 4 megabit cartridge
on the Mega Drive console. Through the years, it's fame and popularity has grown to appeal
to puzzle gaming fans everywhere. Puyo Puyo is available in Japanese arcades as well as on
many of the popular console formats in Japan including the SFC, the SATURN and the
Playstation. The latest version of Puyo Puyo offers more of the same gameplay that we've
grown to know and adore. The objective is deceptively simple: Match the falling jellies
(blobs, drops, aka Puyos) in like color combinations of four. Once you have a match, the
Puyos will glimmer and then fade away, dropping a transparent Puyo in your opponent's
space. This transparent Puyo is your weapon as well as worst enemy because it will foil
carefully crafted combinations, especially when they rain down like so much flotsam and
block your handiwork. Clearing them will require that you build a color combination that
touches the transparent Puyo. The art in this game is the building of chain combinations
that match in succession which will crush your opponent with an avalanche of transparent
Puyos.
The Dreamcast version looks fantastic with luminescent Puyos in bright, shiny
colors. Hook it up to a VGA Box for what we consider to be the best looking Puyo to date
with brilliant, neat graphics. The four player simultaneous mode is something we'll have
to get into but it looks like a lot of fun. Sure, it's just Puyo Puyo but
we still have to love it just the same. Highly recommended for fans of the game and for
new inductees into the Puyo Puyo cult. |
