Thunderforce Episode V: The Vastian Steel

In 2106, weaponry made by alien intelligence was found orbiting the solar system beyond Pluto. Its name was Vastian Steel, or Vasteel. In 2139, a large unmanned artificial island named Babel controlled by an artificial intelligence known Guardian was constructed in the South Pacific Ocean as a research facility into Vasteel technology. In 2150, the Guardian develops independent consciousness and declares war on the human race. The human race suffers heavy casualties in it's first encounter with Vasteel technology. The special flight squadron Thunder Force is formed with the sole purpose of destroying the Guardian and Babel.

Gauntlet

Playstation Thunderforce V begins with a doomsday scenario that propels you into battle. The game begins with a selectable level array where you can choose from three of the first subset of levels. No Blue began our game and this level features shooter action that begins amidst a blue sky backdrop with doughy clouds in the background and a shimmering sea below. Along the way, serpents will erupt from the seas and travel in arcs as they return to the waters. Later on, you'll dip into the brine and watch as fishes go by in schools and  then emerge again into the air, all the while shooting feverishly. The first level boss is a metallic butterfly with light curtains under it's wings. During your battle, you'll defeat it one time in the air but then drop into the water for a final round with the boss.

The Fleet

The Thunderforce brand is a strong name in shooter land. Thunderforce V may very well represent the pinnacle of it's pedigree from the past decade. TFV is fast, detailed and difficult. This is not a shooter that will let you build up your weaponry to hulking levels but it'll give you some great tools to work with. The enemies and bosses are also well designed so that they present a challenge but they're not so overwhelming as to give you no recourse or chance when they come at you with guns blazing. The game is well balanced between your weaponry and the enemy soldier's abilities. Thunderforce V is an incredible shooter and it follows the Saturn original faithfully with little to no slowdown and only intermittent, barely noticeable pauses during some points in the game. Overall, this is the best Playstation shooter this side of Soukyugurentai.
