Bowling games are far and few on our beloved consoles. We still enjoy League Bowling on the Neo-Geo and to a lesser extent, King of Bowling on the Playstation. Family Bowling is not as polished in the gameplay department as League Bowling but it is a definite step up from KoB. Upon starting the game, the player can choose from ten different bowlers who are differentiated by their innate abilities such as ball control and spin attack. As you begin to bowl, the view moves to a 3/4 side perspective of the bowlers as they hop, step and throw the bowling ball down the lane. Certain patterns will always get you a strike but the precise timing that is required when you release the ball will probably still make for some less than perfect sessions. Graphics are decidedly rougher than what we've become accustomed to on the Playstation but the animation is smooth and the shots of the pins as they explode in a cacophony are impressive to behold. |
