As the One Year
War came to a close and events transpired in the Gundam universe, two empires
rose to prominence on Earth: The Kyouryuu and the Youma. Sending out legions on
bids of domination, the up and coming kingdoms were nevertheless beaten back by
the likes of Mazinger Z, Reideen, and other mega-mighty robot forces. As a
student, you and other talented schoolmates are drafted into a war to defend
against the incursions of the Kyouryuu and Youma - and something even bigger as
the SRW chapters roll and veils are lifted from the storyline...
Improving on the Playstation original, the Dreamcast version of
Super Robot Wars Alpha adds a number of game features and options to the
addictive action. Most important in the game-play department is the ability to
perform a combination attack when you line up a robot such as Mazinger
alongside Getter Robo. Once together, a new mega attack pops up in your options
of available offensives. Other robots may join together to fire off heavy
artillery such as the Gundam Wing contingent, the EVA crew, and others. A 3-D
battle sequence replaces the 2-D of yore and new story forks allow for
different endings. A new option to view movies of conquered quests is a nice
touch but the sound, karaoke option, and music remain the same as the
Playstation version. Another niggle for voracious fans to contend with lies in
the loading time of the detailed battle sequences. Similar to the PS SRW
Alpha's loading times, the DC version chugs on for 7-10 seconds on each battle
animation but antsy warriors may toggle the cinematic sequences off to rush up
the fights. In closing, this release equates "must-get" fodder for
Super Robot Warriors.
