Dreamcast USA
It wasn't supposed to happen this way but it has. NCS is not fully
aware of what is happening with the Dreamcast situation at chain stores but we would
imagine that Toys R Us, Electronics Boutique and other chains will have enough Dreamcast
consoles and software to satiate demand today. The story on the third party distribution
side is another situation entirely and it can only be called a nightmare. When the
Dreamcast was originally released in Japan, supplies were tight, which caused unit values
to triple. DC allocation in the USA to third party distribution is tighter than what we
experienced with the Japanese launch. The Dreamcast will undoubtedly be a huge success
this week on the back of a marketing blitz and the console will sell out but distribution
companies such as SVG, Mecca, VLM, etc will not partake in the boom due to heavy
allocation and a laughable quantity of Dreamcast consoles shipped to them. In turn,
independent retail stores that are not affiliated with the big chains will get a fraction
of what they need. Some will get one Dreamcast console and a sprinkling of games if
they're lucky. It's an ugly scene but Sega of America strikes again. |
