King's Field IV
PS2 King's Field 4

US$63

Love it or leave it, the King's Field series enjoys it's camp of ardent supporters as well as venal detractors. Positive sentiment exults the suspense in the game, the first person perspective in an adventure setting, and the realistic trudging speed as you make your way across a dank dungeon area in search of sword fodder. Weigh yourself down with big armor, heft a heavy sword and assorted trinkets and your movements will obey laws of nature and slow your speed. Haters may cite the measured pace of the game as being too realistic. Apparently, fantasy should run fast...
Taking place in a forested area as well as inside the confines of an underground cavern, King's Field 4 exudes a dream-like quality whether you're traversing mottled grounds or viewing stone creatures hanging from forlorn walls. Skeletal warriors rising from pockets of mist and shambling ogres in dirty loincloths add to the surreal nature of it all. The use of mighty spells, which weave through the air, evaporating foes to dust complete the dreamy illusion. Beautiful to behold and certain to captivate fans of the King's Field style of adventuring. Recommended.

PS2 Time Crisis 2 + Guncon 2 Pre-sold out

US$88

Originally released in 1997, Time Crisis 2 foisted two secret agents going by the names of Keith Martin and Robert Baxter onto a shooting rampage under the guise of rescuing fellow agent Christy Ryan. The coin-op cabinet featured two televisions, side by side, so two players could drop quarters simultaneously and take up the gun. Foregoing the lazy way of bringing coin-op games home, Namco polishes the PS2 conversion of TC2 with updated graphics, new game objectives, and throws in a number of bonus game modes including a quick draw contest, agent trainer, and skeet shooting. The 2-player split-screen mode runs at full speed and maintains aspect ratios by "wide-screening" the two windows. Highly enjoyable, Time Crisis 2 supplies a jolt of mindless trigger wrecking action as you blast caps at screen goons and assorted henchmen. Also included in the Japanese packaging sits the new Guncon v2.0. Colored matte black as opposed to bright orange for the American Guncon v2.0, the new weapon features a comfortable grip, a tactile trigger, and good weight to balance in your hands. NCS is now pre-sold out of the Japanese Time Crisis 2 package but we expect to restock the game within 1 week's time.
PS2 The Yamate Line

US$63

Not content to watch Taito take all the thunder for their popular line of Densha de Go! train simulations, Sony gets into the action with their own locomotive game. A new ~US$200 train controller was also released in Japan to complement the game but we'll take delivery in 2 weeks.

Trouble in Japan

Worsening economic conditions in Japan have started to impact NCS' vendors and suppliers, with two of our longtime distributors shutting their doors this week. Our bigger suppliers and main distributors in Japan/Asia are in no danger of going out of business but we have noticed lack of stock, slower availability of goods, and general reluctance to carry "risky" products. The term risky generally covers anything orphaned, including the Dreamcast, and we may have a harder time stocking DC releases in the coming months. NCS will survey the landscape and work out new arrangements with suppliers but be mindful of this scenario if DC imports are delayed or slower to arrive than normal.
