Saturn Space Hulk: Vengence of the Blood Angels
Besides having an exotic sounding subtitle, Space Hulk also has the distinction of being one of the earlier 'Doom' clones that hit the market a few years back when Castle Wolfenstein and Doom were revolutionizing the way we played shooters. Space Hulk hails from the 3DO platform and maintains the pixelly looking graphics and interesting storyline from that earlier incarnation. I am very curious about why this title was re-released in this day and age because it is not that great a game. It could be that the company wanted to penetrate the Saturn platform or are attempting to generate some revenue with a game that would otherwise sit and gather dust. Or maybe they wanted to meet their monthly quota of at least one release per month as per Namco. Granted, it has not been that long since the 3DO market collapsed and Trip Hawkins' vision of one 3DO on every desk in America has dissipated but I say let sleeping dogs lie. There were some great 3DO games and they should get new life on the de-facto32-bit machines because not too many people got the 3DO and they missed out on those great games. I would welcome their re-release but this one is not one of those great ones. Let it be. I pray that there is no Sony Playstation version of Space Hulk because it would only mean that distributors will have to stock something that will sell through very slowly and cause a lot of pain and grief when the price is slashed by 60% to rid it from our bursting shelves. There are 22 new releases this week for the USA and Japanese Playstation and Saturn. Thats a lot of product competing for the consumer's dollar and we will have to weed out the good stuff from the detritus. Space Hulk falls in the latter bin... Man, that was a bit harsh...hows this:
'Space Hulk is your average, run of the mill 'Doom' clone that you will enjoy for a few days. Try renting it instead of buying it to protect yourself and to make sure that you can live with it after the first hour'
There. Isn't that better?
